I would not keep it. It's probably going to die soon anyway.
I have been looking for a second frige. I found one on Craigs List, it is an Amana freezer on the bottom. When I emailed her I asked how old it was and she said 7 yrs old.
When I got to her house I looked at it and it appeared older than that to me-I spend a LOT of time looking and there are just certain things that stick out to me that say how old certain appliances are. Funny thing is I used to have one (freezer on the bottom) and we bought ours in 1995 and I Hated it! I gave it away in 2002 when we replaced it with a side by side.
When I went to close the door on this freezer it wouldn't shut right. When I swung the door open all the way I saw the gasket needed to be replaced, it was pulled out at the inside corner making the door not shut, so I tried to pull it out to shift it back. Then I couldn't get it back in the slot (I have replaced a gasket before so I kinda knew what I was doing) and felt really bad. I explained to her I thought it was a bit older than 7 yrs and that the gasket was going to have to be replaced. I got my smart phone out and tried to quickly find out the price of the gasket....I knew she was in a hurry so I was rushing and nothing good ever comes of that. She then says, just take the frige, if you don't then I am giving it to habitat for humanity. I felt kinda bad, she was asking $100....After much mental anguish my son and I got it loaded in our truck and I took it feeling bad giving her nothing for what I thought was maybe 10 yr old frige that at the time I considered sending her some money after I replaced the gasket.
$100-price of gasket=what I was willing to pay.
Long story short, the frige was manufactured in May 1996 (googled it) and the new gasket will be $60-$70 including shipping...I am just not sure I want to put the gasket into a frige that may not last that long. It isn't in horrible shape (the one I gave away 10 yrs ago had a lot of rust from juice being spilled on the top and it was NOT clean) but it is 15 yrs old...Needless to say, I don't feel bad taking it for free now, and she wasn't hurting for money. I think she was glad to have it our of her garage.
Anyone want to give me advice?

N. CA wife and mother of 2 girls ages 16 & 10Take a look at my have list here
Well, I have a Kenmore (scratch and dent) bought brand new in 1995 (I think it was). Freezer on top. Nothing fancy. The gaskets on it are not doing well. The rack thingys on the door that hold things in won't stay in the slots. The bottom tray (glass) in the main fridge support broke, so I can't use the right side crisper tray. Other than that, for a 16 year old fridge, it runs fine.
I also have a 1959 (PINK even!) fridge that is still running just fine, although I have to defrost it every few months..."freezer" section frosts really badly. Hubby has an even older one out in the garage that still works fine.
How much electric they pull, I don't know....don;t want to know. lol It's really not the age of the appliance, it's how well it was made. Buying secondhand, though is a pig-in-a-poke. If it were me, I'd do the gaslet thing and giove it a try. If the electric bill spikes, then by all means get rid of it. But if it works fine, then $60 is whole lot cheaper than $600-$800 or whatever a new one costs nowadays.
No way for me. The ones that old use a lot more electricity too so there's another cost.
OOPS - sorry FunnyFace - I didn't read all the posts and didn't mean to copy yours.

Not long ago my family had a discussion about older refrigerators, and the cost of running them compared to the newer ones.
One nifty little tool my brother found makes evaluating the cost/benefit very easy:
Just go here and input the numbers:
ENERGY STAR
HTH!
clippy you so helpful!
I did it...and I have to say this does NOT deter me from fixing and using it...
It says it was manufactured in 1998 (2 yrs newer) and it only costs $71 a year to run! and I could save $120 over 5 yrs replacing it with a new one...which a new one was never on the table...but think about I save only $24 a year buying a NEW one....that is only $2 a month.
It only costs $71 a year to run $71/12=$5.91 a month to run anyway!
