Default Do you eat food that other people prepare?

Maybe I am just weird but I am wondering if other people are like me. I do not eat food that others make. For example, company work parties - Christmas, Thanksgiving, where everyone brings a dish. I do not trust others enough to eat the food they make (whether I am friends with them or not). I don't trust their food sanitation practices (you have no idea how that food was prepared or if done so in the proper manner), you also really don't even know the people who are preparing it.

Am I weird or do others think like me?

Ditto, very picky about the source of my food.

When I was a teenager - this lady made wonderful spaghetti and tuna salad every Sunday and brought it for lunch for all of us.

I noticed lots would never eat it.
Someone finally told me that her house was really bad and they would not drink a soda from it. Totally trashed.

Got me to thinking and I am very picky now.

Like you said - you never know.
    I used 2048 q's FEB 2011 because of SFShopper ,,,offline,,,,,alot!

I think like you. I will eat what some other people make. Depends on the person. But I will not eat what some others make unless I actually see them prepare it. I have one SIL who served me mashed potatoes that were made with sour cream that had expired over a year ago. Her theory was that sour cream is already sour! Of course she told me this after I ate them. She has offered me leftover Chinese food that was over a week old. I have seen her leave food sitting out at room temperature sometimes for over 24 hours. And then she wonders why she got sick. Unless I see her buy the food, put it away safely and then later serve it to me, I won't eat what she makes.

I do not, not, not like potlucks! Now that I know that I have food allergies, nothing at those would be safe for me. But back when I did eat such stuff, I once took a piece of what I thought was cranberry bread. I love cranberry bread. But when I bit in I immediately noticed something was wrong. It was cherry bread. Eek! I did not like that.

I also once accepted a piece of candy from a coworker that her mom made. Once I bit in, I wished I had not. It was sickly sweet. I do not like really sweet things.

You're not weird. I think alot of ppl don't even think about it. I'm pretty picky about it too. My husband loves buffets and all I can think about while I'm there is how many ppl didn't wash their hands and are eating there.

I don't give it much thought. Considering we can get listeria, ecoli, samonella & various other deadly diseases in everything we buy to fix ourselves, I'm just not all that worried about friends & family killing me with their food.

Then there's the air I breathe, the pesticides on my fruit, the flu bug on the gas pump, cell towers & overhead electrical lines everywhere I go & disease transmitting mosquitoes coming in from various countries.

I'd much rather die from Sister Iva's red velvet cake than from any of the aforementioned causes.

And I don't put much faith in those gloves folks wear at restaurants either. They do little good when they just scratch their butt with the gloves on. True story.

I generally don't have an issue with eating food prepared by other people. Maybe it was my upbringing with lots of potluck dinners at weddings/funerals/school awards banquets/etc., bake sales, and whatnot. Granted I come from a very small town with just 525 people so everyone knew and trusted each other. I don't know if I'd feel as secure in this day and age as to buy something from a bakesale put on by people I didn't know. At least with places that are required to pass inspection, you have a better degree of food safety. I think it comes down to giving people the benefit of the doubt in most cases.

I play bunko once a month and we have potluck before we play, doesn't bother me a bit, but reading what ya all said, it is kinda scary, but on the other hand what meggers said totally makes sense also. So, I'll go ahead and be a pig once a month

I'm with ya on the glove thing.

What kills me is your at the dentist and they have their gloves on but yet they are touching this drawer and that drawer, typing on the puter , touching this and that. Put the frickin gloves on then go in my mouth.

I never could bring myself to buy stuff from bake sales, etc., for the reasons you mention but then again I do eat out at restaurants which could be just as bad if not worse.

Doglover - do you ever eat out?
