CHAT Do you drive? I suffer from anxiety when I do!

I do not drive, I always have someone drive me to where I would like to go to get my deals but I do have severe anxiety when I get into anyone's car. I have seen too many accidents and known too many people who have passed away from them all because of careless drivers on the road and inattention. My BIL is a rescue 911 dispatcher and he has access to the official crime scene photos of accidents on the highways.....YEAH.....pretty eye opening and makes you think twice when you get into your vehicle....

This was all brought on today by a horrible dream I had this morning that woke me up. I think I am going to stay home today.

yes I drive. I have been in two pretty bad accidents but I still drive. I cant stand to wait for someone to come take me where I want or need to go. I like to stand on my own two feet to well for that. Plus some of the people I know I dont want them to drive on the road at the same time I do let on them drive me.
I am sorry you have severe anxiety about driving or even getting in a car. I know that has to be hard on you. Myself I try to block out the bad on things like that so I can do what I need to do to care for my family. Not much gets to me,I guess because I have been threw alot in my life and I decided not to let it get the best of me.

I drive, but I am more nervous about it than I used to be. I want to wring necks when I see swerving cars only to discover they're texting teens. I literally followed a kid home one night & duhrn near escorted him to his front door to talk to his parents. I left without a word, but it wasn't easy.

I have always been a very defensive driver though & it's saved me an insurance call more than once. I know someone that doesn't drive though. She's just too nervous & frankly, I'd prefer she didn't get behind a wheel. LOL!

I had a horrific nightmare drive home from Missouri to Utah that nearly killed my family and I...but through many prayers and a wonderful trucker who new we couldn't see...saved us out of a white out down a canyon.

So I no longer am willing to drive home during the winter time. I will fly or not go home. It's a 2 day drive and you just cannot be dependent on the weather behaving.

If I was having that bad of a time though...I would probably talk to a counselor though. HUGS!!!

No way I could stand to not drive - that would make me WAY too dependent on others. Yes you take on a certain amount of risk when you get on the road but that's the price you pay for mobility.

Instead of thinking about the ones who lost their lives or were injured try looking up the statistics on how many people safely reach their destinations driving every day. It's a LOT!

IMO it's one of those things that the more you do it the better you become.

If you have children, I would think not driving would be a serious liability (unless you're in a city with various methods of public transportation). You don't want to have to wait on someone to take them to appointments or functions or even the ER if it becomes necessary.

when I do get into a vehicle, I bring a book, that way I am not looking at the highway. My friends and family are always around to take me shopping, because they know I get good deals and I share ;)

I cannot imagine not driving. Half of my life is spent in the car driving between working PT, shopping for deals, both kids in sports and school activities.

I had 2 close calls just in the past few weeks. Some guy ran a 4 way stop and came within inches of hitting me. Today a guy cut in front of me and almost hit me. It makes me nervous to drive sometimes but I have to do it.

I'm 37 and never got my license. I went through driver's training at 15, but never had the urge to drive. Plus I know I'd suck at it. So the thought of having a 2,000+ lb. deadly weapon under my control is unsettling.

Yes, it's a pain to need a ride anywhere I go. And it's especially bad when DH has to take time off work and lose money just to take me or DD to appointments. Fortunately, my SIL now lives close and she's a SAHM so she's been helping us out with DD's dental appointments lately.

I do see myself eventually getting my license. I just have to get up the nerve to do it. And find a good teacher who can turn me into a confident driver.

I'll drive just about anything anywhere. Motorcycles, tractor trailers, I'm totally comfortable in them. I got a case of nerves and sold my motorcycle after someone hit me on it earlier this year, but I still plan to ride again. For sure, driving doesn't bother me.

I dont mean to down you riding with friends and family everywhere. I have gave people rides over and over before and I just want to say that after a few weeks it gets old even if they are paying for the gas ect. I got to where I did not want to answer the phone when they called for I knew they wantted a ride somewhere. I am not saying your friends and family feel that way but I would think that it dose get old to them. Most people are busy with their own families but would feel bad if they did not help out a friend or family member that needs a ride. Since I know what its like to be the ride giver I only ask for ride if I really really have to. My battery died on my van and hated to have to ask for a ride to get it replaced.

I will drive whatever, like smee said if it moves I will drive it...I just cant see not myself not having the freedom I have by driving. Really just thinking about having to ask for rides everywhere makes me feel anxiety like.

Its funny how people are so different when it comes to these kind of things...it really sounds like you dont need to be driving at all if you cant even look at the highway.

We have no local public rides here(bus, taxi or ect) so its drive, walk or ask for a ride.
