Default So at first her problem was him needing special help, NOW he is just not staying focused during the day and it is affecting Math and reading lesson

My oldest son had her 2004-2005 school year so I know what to expect from this teacher. I am just slightly irrked by how she worded her note to me.. Just to refresh my memory of how irritated she used to make me I pulled out my oldest report card and all his things I kept from first grade.. I knew would come in handy one day.. So After reading all of the folder notes and such it is gonna be a long year. And to her surprise my middle child is not a sensitive cry at the drop of a hat type of kid, He will not bat his eyelashes at telling her at what a crotchity old hag he thinks she is! He is very straight forward, I have not discouraged this behavior to much (my bad I know but after my oldest struggling for years and bottling his feelings up and having major melt downs there is no reason to teach my kids to be a door mat of teachers or classmates. So any way I have talked to my ds 5 almost 6 yr old asking him what his teacher is talking about and he says he is just raising his hand for for help like the other kids. So I am trying to nicely figure out how to reply to that question.. What I am thinking of is.. Typically no he doesn't require special help. I am concerned what exactly you mean that he needs special help during the day?

He might be hyperactive if anything but special just his that special button on me..

Thanks for letting me get this off my chest.

I would call her first thing tomorrow and ask that she speak to you personally regarding any potential issues. Sending a note home about "special help" is a passive-aggressive way of saying "your kid needs too much attention, and I don't want to deal with it". Notes in the back pack are for open house, fundraisers, field trips, etc, not for "special help".

I also agree with ^. you should talk to her tomorrow or next school day, (they don't have school here tomorrow so it would be Monday if your kids don't have school tomorrow either)

I would tend to agree with Amy but you always have to be careful of retaliation. Sugar is better than vinegar. Back when I was working retail, if someone was being really nasty.....I would ask them if I had done something to offend them? This always immediately diffused the situation as it never had anything to do with me. Find out what she's talking about and ask what you can do to "help" with the "problem". Best wishes, nancy

mothers are very protective of their young. I would speak to her in person and get it all off your chest.

Thanks everyone I'll definitely be making this call first thing in the morning and clear the air for the weekend. I guess if she would have suggested like he is telling me he asks for help on class work it would have justified her note but the fact that she is classifying it as special help it seems to me she is saying he is not capable of anything. He can tie his own shoes, zip and button his pants and coat. He use the bathroom on his own. Just really makes me wonder where she is planning to go with this. I know with my oldest son she constantly made remarks that was is so immature to young for his grade. They both have October birthdays and in first grade 5 turning 6. I do tend to get a bent nose when my kids are put down, I try my best to handle it appropriately though.

So finally I was able to get to the bottom of the first issue basically he was just being antsy and having a hard time sitting still. The routine was a bit of an adjustment for him too. That was her problem with him needing special help.

I decided maybe he needed and earlier bed time so I went with that. He started going to bed earlier then cause and effect he wakes up earlier. So in result he gets tired sooner in the day. Now she is having a hard time with him staying focused. Really what does she want me to do. She says the last 2 weeks this has been an issue. I changed his bed time about a month ago. The only thing that is different is he has had this night time cough maybe that is disturbing his sleep schedule. She tells me he can't stay focused during Math and Reading. She has to give him constant reminders. Constantly tell him to buckle down and do first grade work. She has taken his free time away from him for a few days. I am just like why is she waiting 2 weeks to bring light to the situation. Like leave me in the dark and then BAM its been 2 weeks and tell me along he has not been staying focused. I let her know he reads the material she sends home he gets really excited about reading and loves doing math problems with me. He constantly say mom do you know what this + that = Then I turn it around on him I tell him I know the answer but I would like him to tell me what his answer is. I know he is 100% capable of doing first grade work. I feel like she is just expecting way too much from him. I knew to expect this from her. Usually once my kids birthday passes and a teacher gets wind they are almost a year younger than other kids in the class the "Oh they are so immature, and so off task and blah blah blah I am just so sick of it.... I am at a lost for word of what to say to this teacher. I feel like she just loves to nit pick and make parents feel like they are doing such and awful job no matter what. I am keeping my kid focused when I am teaching him things at home I don't know what she is doing wrong! Sorry I am just pretty ticked right now I hate people criticizing my kids.
