My inlaws live about 25 miles away. Close enough for babysitting, but far enough away where I don't have to see them often. I like it that way.

There are many forms of death - you can die physically, you can die mentally and you can sadly die from loneliness.

I wouldn't mind myself, although I don't think my mother-in-law would ever do that. She's not the type to stay more than a few days at most.

My FIL passed shortly after I married his son. I miss him something horrid. He was a wonderful man to talk to and could shape DH up with just a few words. MIL on the other hand, either she or I have control issues. Not certain who yet.... She lives 1.7 miles from us and calls either once or thrice a day. I used to enjoy doing things with her/for her, but I'm not certain anymore. She is a very frail 70-something, she is particular beyond words.

Yesterday, it was 70'ish degrees here. DD #2 was going with her to hear an astronomer speak (first, what 10 year old girl wants to listen to a presentation from an astronomer?) and she didn't like that DD had on flip flops. Made a big deal to her and DH about changing shoes. So, DD went and changed shoes.

MIL ALWAYS gets her way cause she is MIL.

My Mom on the other hand, lives 2 hours away and is an entirely different type of control freak. She humiliates and verbally abuses you to get her way. She also won't come to my house cause of my three cats. Hmm..... wonder why I have three and a foster cat?? I wonder why......

My father in law is awesome and I could live with him for 6 weeks..... My Mil and him are divorced and I see why. My mother in law is one of those hispanic women who think that nothing you do is good enough for her son.... She told my DH that I was with him for a baby daddy, that my kids weren't his, that he should chose her over me,her new husband even tried to punch me in the face while holding my then newborn... So no I couldn't live with her for ANY amount of time...... She has to one up me ALL the time, not that I care but If i cook DH something that he says is so good she will say"well isn't mine better" she HAS to be in control and she belittles our parenting..... according to her all 4 of her kids walked at 6 months and were breastfed till they were 20 (NO i am not being serious about the breast feeding but yeah)

Rick's mother is still living. She's in Detroit and we are in Chattanooga, TN. We went for Thanksgiving week. Rick now has her on speed dial; 666. To get to her house, you take a right on M-59 and follow that road straight to the gates of hell.
