The only thing I know about Direct TV is several friends have lived in areas where that was all that was available initially. You know, new subdivisions on the edge of town sort of thing. Every one of them switched to other providers as soon as they were available to them because faster speeds were offered. I'd say check with the websites where people rate their internet and check their internet actual speed via some of the speed test forums. One of the comments I recall from friends was that when they used the on demand option on their Direct TV, it actually used some of their internet and really drug down the internet speed when in use. Another said it was fine for average web surfing, but you cannot play any online games using Direct TV. This was a couple of years ago, but I don't think there has been any real change in Direct TV in that time frame. Maybe there are faster options they make available where they have to compete, I don't know. I've also heard a lot of complaints on billing issues with them over the years, but don't know enough of the details to really comment. Probably if you just search Direct TV complaints and Direct TV reviews something will show up.
