Default School's been underway a while - how are your kids doing?

I'm just wondering about everyone's kiddos - the young ones and the high school ones - how is everyone adjusting?

Are the young ones liking school?

Are the teachers better or worse than you thought?

My DD started middle school this year and even though everyone was saying it would be such a huge adjustment, she seems to be doing pretty well so far. She tends to lose focus sometimes, but so far she doesn't seem to even have as much homework as she did last year, so it hasn't been too bad. She also gets out of school about an hour and a half earlier now, so the evening doesn't seem to be completely devoted to homework!

I think the end of her first 6-week grading period is after this coming week, and as of right now she has an A or an A+ in all 6 of her classes, and she is in the Advanced Program. I am very proud of her :-)

rebate_queen - everyone told me the odd years were the worst - I don't know why! We didn't have any real problem except 1 of mine in 3rd grade and sadly, we weren't the only ones that had issues with that teacher.

Yayy for your daughter. I hope she has a great year!

No other reports??? Dang. Well I hope all are doing ok and that the worries some of us had were unfounded.

Ugh. Our school posts grades online. I just checked and it said my daughter was missing math homework that she has in her notebook. It has been corrected. So she will have to show that to the teacher tomorrow. Hopefully she will go tomorrow.

She missed school on Friday because she said she was sick. I didn't believe her. Took her to the Dr. as a followup on a hand and arm twitch from a week ago that has resolved. Dr. checked her ear and said it was infected. Didn't want to prescribe antibiotic because she said they always resolve at that age. Where the Drs. get this from is beyond me! Hers never resolve. They only get worse. I'm 52 and my ear infections only get worse unless they are treated.

She did write a prescription for antibiotic but told me not to fill it unless she gets a fever. Well phooey on that. Today she had body aches, was chilling then too hot and her ear is killing her. I can't seem to buy a thermometer that is accurate. I have tried. I have bought dozens. I just got the prescription.

I hope she hasn't missed much in her other classes. The school doesn't allow them any leeway this year. She's in 8th grade. They require that they do the school work and homework at home while sick. Gah! At least she did have all weekend to do it.

We were pleased with her teachers but then the gym teachers switched classes and now she has the same one she had last year and we both dislike her. Daughter had a lot of injuries last year and brought in notes from the Dr. excusing her from class. But then the teacher paid no mind to that and said she had to participate anyway. I can't help but wonder if she didn't cause the injuries to last longer or get worse.

So far DD's 5th grade year is going swimmingly!! I didn't know the teacher that she has (second time thru this school). I've noticed most of her homework/quizzes are coming back B+ or better, except for math facts. Time to break out flashcards! Dollar store, here I come!!

Really wish I could post happy things about the eldest's adventures in Community College, but alas she flunked out Spring quarter and has no desire to change her thoughts or behaviour so that she could go back

Its been a great start so far!! DS is in 7th grade and is in actual middle school now since our school district has a school just for sixth graders. He loves middle school. He has great teachers and so far is getting all A's. I love that the grades are updated online daily so I can keep an eye on his grades!

He does have more homework this year which he doesn't like but he gets it done. He is also really excited about football. Last year the 7th grade football team did not win any games so he was thinking that this year the team would not be great but so far they have won all 3 games. He is also excited to do ski club and wrestling in the winter and lacrosse in the spring.

DD is in 4th grade and is just loving it. This is the first year where they switch classes for math, social studies and language arts so she loves that. She really likes her teacher. So far she has brought home all A's on all of her tests and homework so I hope it stays that way!! She has been really good about getting all of her homework done right after school.

momof2inohio - wow, your school offers skiing??? That's great. Our school doesn't even have a swimming pool. And that's very helpful that your school updates the grades daily - sometimes we go a couple of weeks with no new grades.

hrdlckwmn - awesome about your younger one. Do they do "mad minutes"? Those are really good for learning the multiplication tables because they're only competing against their own time - not another students'. I'm horrible at math but I still remember my multiplication tables because my 4th grade teacher made learning them really fun. We played around the world and whoever won received .05 so they could buy ice cream. That nickel was a HUGE incentive! LOL

I COMPLETELY understand about your oldest. Mine is very similar.

JulieDB - if my child had physician's orders NOT to do PE and a teacher forced them to I would be upset.

    .
Yep the kids all go on a bus about 45 minutes away to go skiing/snowboarding once a week starting in November. DS wants to try snowboarding this year. DH used to snowboard so he is going to help DS. I have to get him a snowboard and some good boots.

DD#1 seems to be doing ok with college so far. She's re-taking a course she dropped last fall because she just wasn't prepared, even thought her course list said she was. She took a course to help her prepare over the summer, and says it helped a lot. She changed majors last fall from drama teacher to nurse because she is worried she wouldn't find a job as a drama teacher. She has the sort of personality that would clearly have made an awesome drama teacher, but I can't really see her as a nurse. She is determined, though. She has just never been a Science-y person, and I'm still going with her to hold her hand as soon as they say "procedure" so it just doesn't seem like a good fit, but she's doing ok in most of the classes....so.... LOL! Guess mom's do always worry.

DD#2 is taking a dual credit course in her Senior year of high school. I think the biggest lesson she's learning is not to put things off. She put off asking me for help with the first paper due until mere hours before it was due, and then it was barely turned in via their online system in time. We're talking seconds to spare, and it wasn't all the great due to rushing. The high school classes here have a real inclination towards letting the kids turn things in late, but her dual credit class must abide by the college's requirements that everything be turned in on time via their online system. She is upset her current grade is not what she'd like, but there will be more grades to help it out, and I think maybe the lessons in time management will trump what it does to her GPA. I was so unprepared for the time crunches in college and really muddled my first semester. Maybe a bit of a pinch now will save her that.

Skiing and swimming classes in high school?!? Wow, these young'uns have it good! We were lucky to have basket balls and volley balls that would hold air in the girl's program at my high school. My kids' high school has swimming, dance that is dance lessons, not drill team, and really awesome, active drama, art, and even symphony music. They roll their eyes and snicker when I talk about my hick high school years and make cracks about walking to school uphill, both ways.
