SMILE Dumb stunt of the week award goes to . . .

. . . me. I put some chicken pieces in to bake yesterday afternoon and when they were done just turned off the oven to let them sit a little longer. I didn't think of them again til today and I had to throw them out!! And I really like that chicken. sigh . . .

Anyone else need the dumb stunt award?

Aw, I'm sorry. I hate to waste food and that would have bugged me, too.

I do dumb stuff all the time. The most recent was face planting myself into some cushions that I had recently sprinkled with cayenne pepper to discourage the dog from chewing them. That was earlier this week. I already had watery eyes and a runny nose from a cold. Face planting in cayenned cushions was just gravy. And torture.

I have a ground beef saga. It started yesterday. Husband is due to come home. When? I couldn't tell ya. First he said a week from Friday. So to me that would mean Friday the 9th. I needed to know not only to get food for him but to plan his birthday party. Then in talking to him on the phone yesterday he said in 2 or 3 days he wouldn't be home. He is in the military and lives in CA. Daughter and I live in WA. So I was like... Um... Where are you going to be? He said he would be here! So he said he would be here THIS Friday. But then when I called him again, he said he wouldn't be here till Saturday! Gah!

So I had bought this ground beef at Costco yesterday. It was the organic stuff that comes in three one pound packages all stuck together. I was going to make hamburger gravy and mashed potatoes for dinner last night then Spanish rice for tonight, making enough for leftovers in case we weren't home when he got here. Daughter has to go to physical therapy.

But by the time I got around to making dinner (fridge was a mess and I had to really clean it out) I realized that the ground beef expired on the 26th! And it smelled bad so I didn't dare use it. Costco is in another city. I didn't want to have to drive back out there again, plus it was so late they might have been closed by the time we got there. Plus we were going to be busy tonight (1st day of school) and tomorrow and then my dad had a stroke last night and is in the hospital so that just throws another kink in our plans. But I digress...

So I threw out the ground beef and went to Central Market. Got more ground beef. Made dinner. It was good.

I had already chopped the veggies for the Spanish rice. I cooked those and the beef and got the rice nicely toasted. Then I proceeded to add things to it. A can of chopped tomatoes, a can of chicken broth. The last dregs of some taco sauce, chili powder and a little bit of salsa from the fridge. But as soon as I added the salsa I knew something was wrong. I smelled mold! Sure enough there was mold on the inside of the cap. Uh uh. The pan smelled of mold. Foolishly I thought I could just scoop out the salsa and some of the food around it. But no! It still smelled like mold. Then I spied it. A dried up looking chunk of something with mold on it. In the pan!

So... I wound up throwing it all out. What a waste of money! I ran out to the health food store around the corner (and I had just been in that parking lot because I had to go to the drugstore prior) and bought more ground beef and salsa. Totally forgetting that I already had some salsa that I just bought. I was just soooo stressed out by this point. And the ground beef was frozen. I hate cooking it from frozen. But it was either that or go several miles down the road to the grocery store. And fight traffic and wait in line and... Nope. Just went with it.

The end result was not as good as it might have been. The only chicken broth I had was in large boxes. And that is all the health food store sold. So I added a tube of some chicken concentrate. I also didn't have any chopped tomatoes and I don't think the health food store did either. Need to buy those and some more chili powder.

And as luck would have it we may not even be eating the leftovers! We may have to go to the hospital after PT or we may just go out to dinner. It will be so late by then. *sigh*

JulieDB - that is awful. I think I'd have given up after the 2nd loss. Hope your Dad is ok.

Smee - I gotta admit I snickered at your description of the event! Did that set off a round of sneezes?

My dh did that with ground meat the other day. We were making hamburgers the other day - and used the leftovers to make a meatloaf. Since we ate, he forgot about the meatloaf in the oven until it was too late.

Anyone for super well done meatloaf?

A couple years ago for Thanksgiving I was baking a few desserts. I love to multi-task because it is so much quicker. Well I made the pies and thought everything was fine. We went to eat one of the desserts and before we could take a bite my youngest daughter said "Mama why is the pie raw!" It was so pretty on the top but I forgot one thing! I forgot to bake it before adding the rest of the stuff, lol It was a pie that didn't need baking EXCEPT for the crust, lol so we had to throw it away. I can't believe I didn't realize that when I was filling it. I was making other pies that were to be cooked with the raw crust so I guess I overlooked it. I have never forgot to check from now on so I guess it was a lesson learned.

This morning I did something really dumb. DS forgot him gym uniform at home so I had to bring it to school. DD usually rides the bus but since I had to take DS his uniform I took her to school today. Well I was rushed this morning since we are getting ready to leave for vacation tonight right after school...

So I dropped off DS uniform and then was on my way to take DD to school. I was just driving along and realized I totally went right past her school and was just automatically driving home. So I turn around and AGAIN I missed the street to turn onto to get her to school I guess I just had to much on my mind this morning. Finally she did end up getting to school!! She thought it was funny!

Well, we went to meet the teacher night at DD's school last night. DS had baseball practice just up the road so we dropped him off and my DH, 2 DDs and I all went to the school. We went in (a minute or two late because a train coming through the middle of town had blocked traffic for several minutes) and we sat down. At that point I realized we were the only people who had brought kids with us. Later I asked the teacher and she said it was supposed to be adults only. I hadn't heard that but when I got home I looked on the school newsletter and found the words "adults only" under the magnet holding the newsletter to the refrigerator.

Well I missed the road I was supposed to turn on this morning. Duh!

Have any of you ever done this? Showed up for an appointment on the wrong day? I believe I have done that not once, not twice, but 3 times now. I never was the brightest bulb in the box but I have dimmed considerably the past few years.

No sneezing, or at least no more than was caused by the cold. Just a lot of burning. My eyes, nose, throat, even my skin was burning. Proof that stupid does hurt sometimes.

Yes! A couple of weeks ago, we showed up on the wrong day for a church luncheon. It was 30 miles away!

A while back as I was leaving my friend's house, I realized I didn't know where my phone was, so I dialed her from her driveway to ask if I left it inside... yeah.
