HAPPY DANCE Anyone cut their own hair or their family's hair?

Of course I mean of those who aren't actually barbers/stylists. Just wondering cause I cut DH's hair a couple days ago (men's parted cut) and just cut my own last night (long layers).

It has just gotten too hard to pay what the salons charge when they don't ever do Dh's hair to his liking and mine is just simple long layers. So I decided to try myself and I have to admit I was surprised that I did so well. Dh's hair looks better than any of the last 10 times he went to a barber or salon and mine turned out pretty much the same as if I had gone to a salon.

It did however take me FOREVER to cut my own hair...Dh's cut only took me about 30 min which I don't think is bad since I'm not practiced in it yet...but mine...took a whopping 3 hours!!!

I watched some professional demo vids on youtube to learn how. I didn't do it the ponytail cut way a lot of vids show...I wanted to make sure it looked as close to like a professional did it as it could. I thought my arms were about to fall off half way through pulling up all the sections and cutting the layers in...they were so tired. But I was determined to do a good job and make sure all the layers were even...so I took my time. Still worth it since it would have been about $60 for the cut and tip at a salon for me...$20/hr ain't bad.

So, has anyone else picked up this talent/trait/hobby, whatever you want to call it, so that you can save money? How good are you at it? Did it get easier and faster to cut your own hair as you got more practice, or is it just that awkward to cut your own hair that it's gonna take a long time no matter what?

I wish I was brave enough to try! It would save us a ton of money. I just do not think I would be good at it. I know several people who cut their own hair and it looks great!!!

I am going to be brave and start coloring my own hair though I've had highlighted blonde hair since I was 15 but recently decided I was so tired of spending the money so I went to the salon and had her dye my hair back close to my natural color (dark brown). As soon as the regrowth starts I am going to get some over the counter hair dye and do it myself. I do not like my natural color so I am going to keep dying it reddish/brown.

But wow I can't believe it took 3 hours to cut your hair!! My arms would have been so sore lol.

Yep, cut my own. I am extremely tender-headed. Last time a hairdresser used a comb on my hair, she duhrn near ate it for lunch.

I just do a straight cut, so it's easy. I just learned to compare it for eveness in several different ways before leaving the house.

I cut my daughters hair, she has curly hair and gets tangled a lot so when t gets to that point it needs to be cut. Although her godmothers mom has her own salon and only charges us $5 for our cuts it still saves me as money from going all the way there.

I cut my son and dh and it is easy for anyone that doesn't have a barber lience! I do have my cosmetogy lience. Just watch a few videos and you would be how easy it is. They never really taught me how to cut hair in school. I just learned from practice and doing it over and over again.

My mom worked in a salon (for old ladies) when I was a kid. She always cut my hair, and still does. She also cuts my dh and kids hair. I think I've been to a professional 2x in my life, not including a few trips to beauty school for a dye. There's no way I'd pay alot for a hair cut.

How did you enjoy the school for hair color? I am on a tight budget and think I am going to go school next wk to get mine colored. The school in my area only charges 18 bucks. Last time I went to a nice salon I spent 150 bucks for all over color and a horrible cut. I will get my hair cut at a salon like 2x a wk. Everytime I go somewhere to get it cut always turns out horrible. the last haircut I spent 60 for and she thin my ends and it looked horrible! Then time before that went to jcpenny and the lady brused my hair so hard had to take advil after I left. I really haven't had someone give me a good haircut in atleast 2 yrs.

DH does his own hair, and sometimes I clean up the back of it. With my girls, I get their hair cut 1-2 times a year - they just don't need because their hair is really healthy. I go to a salon for mine 3-4 times a year because I need the alone time. :)

I can cut my curly heads kidlets...but long straight haired #1 has to have a pro do it.

I can trim with shavers my DH in a pinch...but I won't touch the top of his head...just near the neck...holds him off for a few extra weeks as needed.

My mop of a head...pro all the way...other then my bangs which I will hack at when I'm sick of them.
