    Default 1960's birthday party

i am going to be planning a surprise birthday party for my mother in law in about a month. she is going to be turning 60. i thought it would be a good idea to have the theme be the 1960's. i love planning and organizing things, but i would love some ideas and opinions. and if you know any where to get some good deals on decorations that would be great. Thanks!!

The first idea that came to mind was using record albums from that time period to decorate. I've seen places hang 45s and 33s using fishing line, and you could even use a 45 as a base for a table decoration. Scour yard sales and thrift stores to get them cheaply.

Candy from the era spread on the tables. There is a great website you can order boxes from. But you could use the list to find it locally if your resourceful

    Random thoughts....
A 60's diner theme might be cool.
    Serve milkshakes and burgers.
Hang posters for the popular bands like Beatles, Stones etc.
Bean bag chairs for people to relax in.
Ask friends/family for lava lamps to decorate.

    Decorate with smiley face stuff
Tie Dye/groovy flower patterned fabric from JoAnn's to use for whatever
Games from back then like Rock Em Sock Em Robots (I think you can buy those right now)

How fun is that! I would ask people to dress like in the 60's. Think Mad Men and beehive and flip hairdos.

Is there a chance that you'll have a big screen tv available for the party? If so, check out this site: http://classic-tv.com/1960sshows/ Then, check your local library to see if they have any of the DVDs in stock. Playing those shows in the background of the party would be pretty cool! You might ask if anyone you know has any of them that you could borrow too.

Play the Twister game by Hasbro, that would be a blast!

If you're looking for some music and you have a computer/laptop with speakers, go to kut.org and click on "Listen" and then find "Twine Time" at the bottom left hand corner. Most of the music played in that segement is from the 1950s-60s. They record it each Saturday night and the previous week's show will be there all week.

It is a recording off of the local Austin NPR station, so you'll get some minimal Listener supported ads here and there, but the music is pretty good for a party in most cases.

Of course there's also those things called CDs, but this might be worth checking out.
