    Default Working at home.....

Okay so Im a stay at home mom to 3 girls, my oldest is 5 and will be starting school next week. So i will still have 2 more at home with me. I am wanting to work from home and try to earn some extra income for my family. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do that is easy and I can do it from home. I was looking into doing maybe the Medical Claims and Billing specialist. Does anyone know anything about that? As far as what you do? I mean is it making phone calls all day or what excatly is it? Any suggestions would be appreciated... Thanks ladies

I do our medical claims at the office I work at along with all the nursing, ordering, financial stuff cleaning and on and on I had always wanted to learn about the billing side of working in the medical field. My desire to learn was driven by watching the billing people in the offices I have worked at and they had really flexible schedules. I took it all in over the course of several years and asked lots of questions. When the doc I work for decided to leave the group he was part of (because the billing was terrible) he really wanted me to do it. I was a little nervous knowing my job could make or break our office financials in no time but I dove in head first and did it. When my youngest daughter started kinder they only had school for the morning and no school care for the afternoon after school. I asked my doc if I could work in the office when my daughter was in school and finish at home and he was totally ok with it. I had a IT tech come out and connect my home computer with my work computer. I did all the management things that needed to be done while in the office and took all the billing stuff home. I would bring home the new copies of insurance cards and input them, do any follow up phone calls on claims that needed to be done and it worked out well. The only thing I needed to do in the office was submit my claims electronically. The insurance companies want to play games with you and you need to learn how to fight back. I would get EOB's back with something stupid like member number not found, DOB does not match and each and every time I would check the data that I put in the system and it was fine. I think it's a way for them to delay payments or see if someone will really call and follow through with payment. We use a EMR system called E Clinical Works and I love it. It makes everything I do in the office much easier and the billing is a breeze. I have since gone back and started working more hours and doing everything I do until my youngest gets out of school at 2:45. Billing is not really hard to do once you get it down and learn the ins and outs. It is a great job to do that can work around your schedule.

Good luck to you and let me know if you need any other info.

Well that sounds easy enough LOL Im sure it will be tough for me in the begining trying to learn everything. Do you have to actually deal with the patients not paying? or do you just deal with the insurance companies ( which I know can be stressful). Im just trying to get a feel for it just to make sure its something that I would enjoy doing as I am stuck at home most of the time. I need something to keep me busy and I would love to earn the extra money as well. Thanks for your reply.

You will deal with patients as well. It's the ones that do not pay the bill that are the problem. I send out 2 statements. I each 30 days. If after 60 days I do not hear from them I send them a 10 day final notice. If I still do not hear from them they then get a phone call and one last chance to pay the bill and if they decide they do not want to pay I send them to collections. If you have a good front office staff and collects the copays, co-insurance and ded at the time of service then it makes is much easier. The second the pt walks out the door and no payment has been paid it ends up costing the office money. Time to do statements, make calls and type letters.
