silk is soy based...not cow based.

some people for various reasons (allergies, lactose issues, vegitarian/vegan ect) drink soy milk.

Some are very warry of soy products because some studies have shown to raise your estrogen levels...which could be cancer causing.

Silk was insisting there were organic...but apparently have had to pull that claim (honestly not sure how any soy product here in the U.S. can claim to be organic cause monsanto basically owns the patent to the soybean now..and they gmo just about everything.)

I do not mind missing calories or fat intake, but need the vitamins, etc.

It is alot cheaper than regular, so I wondered what might be "missing."

Or is it better for you, generally speaking.

Well this one includes the vitamins. Prairie Farms Fat Free Skim Milk nutrition facts and calories - Food Labels - DietFacts.com

can't exactly compare it to the silk soy though. The silk is 11 oz and the prairie farms is 8 oz..and I can't find any link for milk nutrients that isn't 8 oz.

I'll look at some nutrition labels at the store, as I have bought Blue Diamond, Smart Balance and Silk, and they may all be different.
    I need my Vitamin D.
    Thanks.

Your healthiest choice imo would be raw cow or goat milk if your state allows it. If not then I would look for non-homogenized and pasteurized. Neither ultra- pasteurized nor homogenized is all that healthy for us. Also if you get non-homogenized then you need little to worry about the fat content from the research I've found.

If one needs an alternative I'd go with Rice or Almond before I'd choose Soy.

When choosing Soy vs Dairy, it is more so a personal preference, if you are concerned about the calorie/fat content- make sure you get a soy that is labeled "light" which is equivalent to a non-fat ~ 1% milk, the regular is equal to the 2%

As for nutrients, they fortify with calcium and vit D which you will get plenty of, if not then other sources that are in a healthy diet as well.

If you're worried about nutrients/vitamins, I would say Silk is fine... it's fortified with them so it should be nearly the same as milk. Really, it comes down to personal taste preference. I tried to like Soy Milk, but ick, I just hate it. I have not drank cow's milk in over 4 months now... I decided one day to try the Unsweetened Vanilla (or Original) flavored Almond milk, though, and I LOVE it... It tastes sooo good and is less calories than skim milk, and I'm still getting my nutrients... I'll drink it plain, or use it in my coffee and cereal. It's so yummy. I love Almond Breeze brand, but Silk's almond milk is great, too!

I'll second that. I drink raw cow's milk. Trying raw goat's milk tomorrow.

All we drink is the Silk Almond milk. We tried the soy but don't care for the aftertaste. The dark chocolate never last long in our house! My kids and I prefer the vanilla instead of the origional just because you do not get a nutty taste in your cereal. My MIL is a nutritionist and says that it is actually healthier to drink soy/almond/coconut milk than cows milk and is easier to digest.
