    CHEF ~~ Produce Question - Avocados ~~

The other day I threw out about 4 avocados. Again. They were .68 each.

When I bought them they were all very firm so I put them in a bowl on the counter and waited til they give a bit to pressure - a few days. The problem is some of them were ok and some were gross with black streaks.

If I use them too soon though they have no flavor. What's the trick on ripening these without them going bad?

put them in a paper bag on the counter. You can also look over the stickers on them, some say "ripe now" Those are ready to go :) :) :)

Do they give to pressure easily...like your thumb goes in easily...or do they still feel fairly firm but give a little bit? That is the key. You still want them to be pretty firm. I second the paper bag suggestion for only a day or two at most. Or maybe your area are just getting bad batches of avocados. I believe I have had some like that before that i didn't let get too overripe. Not sure why they get those streaks, and sometimes threads of fibers through them. If they aren't too bad. I still eat them...and try to pick out the bad parts, but I loooove avocados. :)

Thanks ladies. No abond, this has been going on for years so it's not just a bad batch.

I don't wait til they're squishy, they still feel firm to me. I've tried using them when they're very firm but then yuck - no taste so you still end up throwing them away.

I'll happily try the paper bag! Now just gotta wait til they go on sale. I usually pay less than .68 each but they just sounded good at the time. And some were, just not all.

Hmmm. Not sure what is going on then.
Maybe then your stores/area are just buying from farms/locations that produce poor avocados (never had problems with ones from California or Mexico).
Or maybe they are that cheap when you buy them because they are a bad batch.
Or maybe the place you are ripening them is too cool...maybe try in a window sill with some sun.
Hopefully you figure it out cause it is very frustrating to open one up to find its gone bad...especially when you have been waiting on it.
