    QUESTION Finders/Keepers a wwyd poll

4 weeks ago my daughter and I found an older ipod in the snow while on a walk. Hoping to use as a teaching tool, I placed a sign in the local grocery store ( small town,) and hung a sign on the pole near where we found it in an attempt to find it's owner.
No one has called to claim it.....what would you do......

If you are asking what to do with it now...
Uhhh...keep it. What else can you do? Throw it away?
I'm sure whoever dropped it has written it off by now. Especially if it is older. Probably used that as an excuse to buy a newer version.
I guess you could donate it or something if you just don't want to teach your daughter about benefiting from others misfortune.

My answer to the poll however would be to immediately claim it as my own. I live in a very populated/pedestrian filled city in a transitional neighborhood. If I found anything like that...finding the owner would be a long shot. I'm sure someone who it didn't even belong to would try to claim it. I am 100% sure anyone who dropped anything around here would never think it would be returned...so they wouldn't even look for signs or anything like that.

    Edit:
I would post signs to set an example too if I had children...but it would be a waste of my time otherwise.

normally i would say take it to the police station, but in all honesty they will sell it at auction if no one claims it, and normally no one claims found property.

i think posting signs around the area is a great thing. you tried to find the owner and no one claimed it. If my child lost theirs, i would make them retrace their steps and we should of seen the signs.

i am going with, you tried your darnest now it is yours.

can you upload stuff to it on itunes??? i know you have i think 5 computers you can hook up to..

I dunno, I've never used an ipod, it's in working condition, would require a charger I guess and purge of the just plain awful music that's on it.

You should be able to. You'll just have to download the iTunes software and register for an account. Then whenever you plug it in to add songs to it...the stuff that is on it will automatically be deleted. You won't be able to keep any of the songs that are on it unless you just never add any of your own to it. Itunes does this to prevent people from just getting songs from their friends that they haven't paid for.
Depending on how old it is, I am not sure if you will be able to find a charger/dock easily.

After 30 days and it goes unclaimed, it's yours. You did all you could short of sky writing or something. Enjoy it!!!!!!!!!

In addition to what you already did I would also have placed an ad in the local paper. Lost/Found ads are free to list here.

if you do this, do not put where it was found and make them tell you the music that is on there so they can identify it...weeds out all the "it is mine" when it isnt theirs

most ipod's (or all i am not for sure i have two)....charge by a usb cord to the computer. you know similar (or maybe the same) as the ones for your camera.

just download itunes, and set up an account and junk the music that is on it.

i know you were trying to teach your dd something, but you tried to find the owner, now it is time to repurpose this item. i love picking trash (not thru it but if it is just sitting there screaming to be picked up and painted) and reusing it for great stuff. maybe try to teach her about this and recycling etc...

I would bring it to the police station because each ipod has a unique id code that can be tracked when you upload/download songs online. I wouldn't want it. I just heard a story of how someone recovered their missing ipod this way from a tech friend. Now, if it were a $100 bill that went unclaimed, I'd use it to buy an ipod LOL
