Velveeta -- storing it

When you buy Velveeta it's not refrigerated but I always put it in the fridge when I get home, I guess because that's what I do with real cheese.

What I wondered is if you don't put it in the fridge how long will it keep?

Also, do you have to refrigerate it after opening the foil package? I would look at the box for that info but right now I don't have any.

I just keep mine in the fridge, too. But I would think you could keep it in a cabinet or on a shelf until you need it since it's not refrigerated at the store. I would definitely keep it in the fridge once the foil has been opened....great thread, interested to see what others have to say!

I've always refrigerated it. Interestingly enough, it is refrigerated at my store.

I'm not sure but I read somewhere that Velveeta is shelf stable because it is actually powdered cheese and oil. I keep mine in fridge though it is stored on the shelf in my stores.

It's not really food. You could probably store it in the attic or the trunk of your car.

We always used to use it as fish bait...... No refrigeration necessary! The fish sure liked it! We would catch plenty of them!

As far as buying and storing, I couldn't really tell you, because when I see it/hear about it, I always think of it as fish bait......so I don't use it.

And yeah, yeah, I know it's not "real" cheese; there are a few supposed "food" items that we like and that's one of them. Only thing we use it for is to make the Rotel-type cheese dip.

Guess I need to do some internet research before I stock up with those good coupons I have.

my stores has it both ways on the shelf and in the frig..I keep it in the frig. I will use it up to about a month past the date as long as it taste right and looks right.

The box says:Refrigate after opening, for up to 8 weeks after open. For best results avoid Frezzing.

Pasteurized prepared cheese product

Contains MILK

ingredients: Milk,water,why,milk protein,milkfat, and some other stuff..

I have stored it on the shelf at home and when I'm ready to use it I open it then store it in the fridge.... keeps it extra soft when not in the fridge. lol
