Is National Grid you elec, Co? Do you get your elec from another co?

I have heard alot of people who buy power from other companies but keep National Grid delevering the elctiricity. It seems like if you could save money National Grid would just allow the savings for staying with them. I get calls from Husdon Energy wanting me to buy power from them They tell me all the billing with be through National Grid but I will save because they buy the power in bulk and so on. I have to commit for 12 months and there would be an early tremination fee of $75. I seem interested yet skeptical! I wonder why National Grid wouldn't offer these programs to loyal customers. The lady who called said it was a program from NY state and all taxes wouls be waved and such, she wants me to be convinced I would be saving money each month, she tells me they would lock me in at 0.079 and she is telling me the average is 12.3 per kw or what ever, I looked at my most resent bill it seems I am paying 0.498888 kw now so at this point I am not convinced or anything, other than these companies are out to line their own pockets, I still have to talk this over with DH but I am currious if any one has bought the elec from some one but National Grid was still the one who sends you your bill I am curious what the end result is. sounds like you are in an open/deregulated market. Before i made any switches i would verify all terms and rates. Normally on electric charges you have a kwh charge, customer charge, some different adders based on kwh (generation costs, transmission costs, etc.) what you are paying now and seeing the .04 might just be one portion of the charges you are paying. one way to find out would be to take your total bill in dollars, and divide that by the number of kwh that you used in the month, that will give you your all in kwh charge. I would even go so far to ask the other company for a sample bill for the same amount of kwh so you can see all of the charges and know what you are getting into, it would allow you to compare apples to apples.

Most of the US is regulated and you don't get a choice. Sounds like New York is one of the few states that is not.

Thanks for the resonds here. I will ask them to give me a sample bill great suggestion. I have heard family mention about the option about being able to have another provider of electricity but National Grid still handles the delivery and billing. I can't think of anyone to call and ask about how it is working out or weather they joined into the plan. I will keep researching. As cold as it has been here latley Our bill has been $118.00 (ish) summer months our highest was $198.00 that is with 2 AC's running almost amonth straight. So I will have to get the old caculator to work and see how it all pans out.

Yep, I researched the issue looks like it is a win win for the other company. My current co is getting $0.049 per kw and the commpetition is offering $0.079 locked in rate for 12 month contract and $75.00 early termination fee. I guess this is nothing I am interested in after all. I looked back as far as I could and didn't see where I ever paid $0.079 kw so no go for me. I think solar panels or windmills might be an alternative but I am sure an expensive investment. I wonder what happens if the sun don't shine or the wind don't blow thought.... Lol!
