    Default Ice Storm!!

The Iceman Cometh...tonight for us. We are dead center in the path of this ice storm and supposed to get 2 or 3 inches of ICE starting later this evening. I would much rather have a foot of snow, which is what the northern part of our state is supposed to get. Anybody out there in the middle getting ice or snow from this storm already? How bad is it? Did you do anything to prepare?

I checked our camp stove and we have 2 cylinders of kerosene if we need it. Also, I have one disposable charcoal grill that I got on clearance for $1 in the garage. Hubby is going to stop at the bread store on his way home from work and then get 5 gallons of kerosene for our space heater. (We have 2 carbon monoxide detectors and I tested them today.)

I am putting a chicken in the crockpot, baked potatoes in the oven and cooking a couple of batches of muffins for food for tomorrow...in addition to what I am cooking for dinner tonight. Made 2 extra gallons of tea. I might boil some eggs to make chicken salad from the left over chicken meat. We've got lunch meat and peanutbutter, lots of soups that could be warmed on the camp stove. I have the full size cooler full of water in our bathroom for flushing when the power goes out. We have a 5 gallon water cooler plus a couple packs of bottled water. Lots of candles, but no wick for our hurricane oil lamp.

I think we shall survive. But, I don't really wanna spend a couple days at home with 3 kids and no power! IPods, cell phones, Gameboys and personal DVD players are all on the chargers. We have batteries for the radios and the emergency battery operated 6 inch TV.

So, did you (or will you) do anything to get ready today?

They are predicting sleet her (maybe 3 inches) and then about a foot of snow on top of that. So they are predicting power outages here as well.

WE are getting a bunch of milk and groceries. Buying a bunch of gallons of water that I can throw in the freezers to help keep things cool.

I also have to pick up a bunch of E oxygen tanks for my son...we only have oxygen now that I can plug in.

My worry is how to stay warm. I have 2 generators but I have no gas and I have no idea how to work them (hubby lives in Arkansas).

We have this portable snowblower thing that I have in the house...will only work if we have power though. Need to find the snow shovel and buy more rock salt.

oh and have to go get the kids meds as well.

Praying at this point that the store still has milk!

We are on the south eastern side in Indiana, we are on the line that can go rain or ice. I am like you, I would much rather have the snow! My hubby went a few ago to get kerosene as well. I am picking up a camp stove from my MIL. I have plenty of foods ect but making some extra things sounds like a good idea... going to go crank up the crock pot and put on some eggs too. Be safe... be warm! Good luck!

If you buy your gas... they should be easy to start. Most new ones operate much like a lawn mower. Push button starts or pulley start. If the stores are out of milk... buy powdered. Granted its not the most ideal.. but its better than nothing. GL!

I would have no idea how to work a generator either!! Hubby is probably bringing one home from work tonight. If not, we still have the kerosene heater to keep us warm and the camp stove for cooking. If we lose power we will close off all the rooms in our house except the kitchen and living room. We'll all sleep on the couches or sleeping bags.

do generators have plugs. Like if I want to plug the fridge in...that is where I don't know how to do it LOL

That reminds me...I'm going to bring in a few coolers from our garage (not attached). That way if I need to I can store food in them with the ice to help them stay cold longer.

That is what we resorted to after the tornado hit our town 2 years ago.

I'm in Ohio, about an hour north of Cincy. Depending on which station I'm watching, we're either going to get lucky and get mostly rain...or else we're in for the storm of our lives! Seriously! Both stations are here in the same city...and they have completely different forecasts.

As for preparing, I made sure to get some salt this morning when I was out and about. We have plenty of food and other supplies. I probably should have bought more batteries for the flashlights, but I think we'll be fine. We have tons of candles! We have about 100 pounds of charcoal, so cooking on the outdoor grill is fine. My husband grills in any weather, so I'm sure he'd do it if we need him to. Both cars have plenty of gas, and I have some cash on hand too. A few years ago, we had a widespread power outage. Some stores were open, but it was cash only, since they couldn't process debit or credit cards. Since then, I've made sure that we have cash on hand...just in case. We have a fireplace, and can close the doors to the living room, so it's the only room that gets heated. We can drag matresses in there and sleep so that we all stay warm.

    We'll be fine.

The generator will need filled with gas and possibly need to be primed. There will be a small button (might look like a bubble) near the area where its started. Typically you will press the priming button a few times.. all this is doing is sending gas into the motor to start easier. Then once its running, if it didnt come with a heavy duty (heavy gauge orange cord) extension cord, you will see a space to plug one in there and then yes... you can plug that cord into any appliance you want. HTH!

I think they do have plugs, otherwise what would be the point? LOL We have a big battery charging thingie (lol technical term) that has two plugs. We have used it when camping or at a NASCAR race. I can plug my crockpot or the small TV into it to watch the news.
