Good idea or not?

We're moving in four months and have to design the entire interior of our home. Of course, family and friends all want a piece of the action and have lots to say about the decorating. My husband and I know what we want and don't care what others like or think about the main decorating ideas, but want them to feel like they had some sort of a part in the making of our home. Everyone is super happy for us since we've gone through a lot the past few years illness wise and being stuck in a small condo with two toddlers (due to the market) and are finally able to have our dream home built. So here's what we came up with. Each of our VIP's will pick a paint color (out of two colors we have already chosen) for a specific room. Is this a stupid idea or do you think it will make them feel as though they had something to do with making our home special?

If you have selected some colors for them to choose from and you are completely comfortable with, sure, I think it is a nice way to keep them included. You can also ask opinions when you get stuck between choices on furniture or artwork, etc- choose someone to call, maybe someone who has an interest and ask them to help you pick one. I think it is wonderful you are doing your best to include them. Good luck and have fun w/ the move!

I think it's asking for trouble. Not to sound like a pessimist but a lot of times it's hard for the couple to agree on things like that, much less if you bring in other varied opinions.

I think if they want a say-so in the design they can help with the payments! LOL

Ditto!!!! At the end of the day it's your house and you need to fix it up just how you want-not what will make others happy. You are very sweet for wanting to include everyone-not many people (including myself) would be open to that.

I have to agree with the PP's. It is a very nice thought for you and your dh to include your family member's input, but at the end of the day, it's your house. You are the ones that have to look and live in it and pay for it - it should be your complete decision on how to decorate it, including the wall colors.

IF you do decide to let others decide what paint color for each room, what's going to happen in a few years when you decide to redecorate one room because you have decided you want a different color now, while leaving all the other rooms as is... Who ever decided on that one paint color may feel slighted that you changed 'their' color but no one else's.


Of course, if you don't take my advice I won't feel slighted at all.... we've been in our house for 2 years now and are still living with construction grade eggshell paint on all of the walls.. We did finally decide on our bathroom color, but alas, the paint can we bought in August remains unopened! lol

I agree with this. My first thought after reading your post is that the only people who get to decide anything about the decor of my home are the ones paying for it. To be honest, I find the whole idea odd.

Ditto this. I can't imagine trying to convince any of my family members what colors they should paint their home.I mean, it's one thing if I go out shopping/browsing with one of my relatives for home goods and you share opinions, but never in a million years would I care to look at paint swatches and pick a color for someone.

I should have added this to my reply this morning, but I guess I was still too sleepy to think straight! lol but it's not all about what colors the wall are or how a house is decorated that makes a home special. It's what you can't see that makes a home special... it's the memories of all the fun and loving times that have happened within the walls of the house that make a home special.

I have to agree - I think it is asking for trouble... it is your home, you have to live with the paint colors, you have to pay the mortgage for the next 30 years, not everyone else... you should pick how you want your home. The other people can pick how they want their home and if they love a paint color - great - they can paint their own rooms in it. If I was struggling to make a decision on a design idea, I might ask a couple people whose opinions and style I value, whether they are family or not - and I would take their opinions into consideration but that would be the extent of it, if it were me.
