Contact lenses are medical devices regulated by the FDA. The discount places are getting the exact same contacts from approved US distributors that an "actual optometrist" would. They're quite reliable.
BTW--just because the doctor has an office in a discount chain, doesn't make them a bad or any lesser doctor. In fact, they're just renting the space from the store, and they're independent doctors of optometry, not affiliated with the store.
Also, you said you wore them for a year and a half, then got your lenses from Sams Club? A contact lens prescription is only valid for one year, so unless you had a new prescription, you should not have been able to obtain them.
As to wearing the lenses for longer than the manufacturer suggests, it is not good for eye health. There is a lot of information available, here is just one of the many I found on a quick google search Disposable Contact Lenses and Frequent Replacement Contacts . There are times to be frugal, but being cheap and unhealthy with your vision isn't one of those times.
