Rising cost of cotton may increase the cost of clothing
Cotton Prices On Rise, Could Mean Paying More For Clothing - News Story - WPXI Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH -- The rising cost of cotton could soon cut into your budget when you buy certain clothing items.
The price of raw cotton has nearly doubled this year, hitting a 15-year high, and consumers will most likely notice the price change when shopping, especially after the Christmas holiday.
Experts said they expect consumers to see a jump in cotton prices by the beginning of next year. They said, typically, there's a four- to six-month lag between when raw material prices jump and when consumers will see it at the store.
The reason for the jump in prices is that Asian cotton producers have limited the global supply. Many big-name U.S. retailers like Walmart, J.C. Penney and Gap depend on the cotton supply in China.
It's expected those brands will have to make up the difference by passing the cost along to consumers.
Financial experts said shoppers can expect to see an increase in the prices of t-shirts and jeans made of 100 percent cotton.
To ease some of the costs, many manufacturers are expected to switch to a 50-50 cotton and polyester blend.
Farmers across the country are also expected to plant more cotton to deal with shortage overseas.
May be time to stock up on 100% cotton clothing???
