My Mom used to send me on errands to the store for her, often with a coupon or two, she always used them but not to any great extent, just a couple here and there.
But both my parents came through the depression era as kids, both their families struggled so I guess trying to save was not unusual.
But that experience obviously stuck with them as all through their adults lives, they saved like there wouldn't be any money in the future. Frugality was king at our house.
When I was in my 30's I learned of my parents net worth and after picking my jaw up off the floor, I reflected and it all made sense to me.
I come by my frugal ways (watch the pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves attitude) honestly
Sidenote: Funny, or maybe not so funny, story. For my parents 50th wedding anniversary all of my siblings and I decided we would buy them a new bedroom set. Had to get them out of the house long enough to break down the old and prepare for delivery of the new set. We pulled it off. But under my Mom's side of the bed were three large coffee cans packed full of change. Learning their net worth and seeing the cans of change were totally strange, until we thought about her childhood. I guess lessons learned stayed with her throughout her life, God rest her sweet soul.
Coupons are found money - who walks by money on the ground??
Saving money ~ it's a way of life, not an attitude
No, my parents never used coupons or were frugal at all. They still aren't but they never had to be. I started using coupons several years ago so I could continue to only have to work PT and be able to stay home with the kids. It has been very hard to learn how to live frugally after growing up in an entirely different way. I am still struggling but I am getting better about learning to be frugal.
yes, i learned to use scissors by cutting out coupons in the 50s, and i used my first coupon all by myself in 1963.
i walked to the store and turned in a free candy bar coupon from the readers' digest, and ate the candy on the walk home.
i was using coupons on pretty much everything before julie and heidi were born!

My mom didn't coupon too much. Maybe something here or there... but I think it was mostly because she could not read English. She did stockpile a lot on sales when something went really cheap. Too bad she can't see me now. She'd be soooo proud.
Do you know what you started? I just came here to party!
My mom used coupons but, I don't remember getting them in inserts. We used to cut them out of magazines (good housekeeping, etc.). I remember going to the doctor's frequently (sickly child here) and while there, we'd tear out all of the q's from their magazines (with the doctor's permission of course)
Mom couponed, but nothing like I do. She had the little drug store coupon organizer.![]()

Growing up, my family always couponed, but not like I do now. We had small stockpiles of certain items and it gave us a chance to try out products we never would have gotten to. As we got older, my mom got out of it.
Once I decided to do major couponing, I got my mom and sis back into it, but they still do not coupon to the degree that I do. It's fun calling and e-mailing each other "deals" and coupon info!
