QUESTION Love and Logic parenting seminars?

Has anyone been to the seminars or a class or done the program?

I've very interested in it. I posted a ISO for the book on CD. I see the seminars in my area and its a 3 hours class for $30.

Just curious if anyone has done the program and get feedback. Is the seminar too "busy" to learn anything, would a smaller group be better? Did you find it to be helpful. I remember seeing something last year about a weekend thing with a smaller group but it was booked and I never got in on that.

Did you just do the program by reading the book or getting the other materials?

Any feedback, insight, help would be much appreciated!

I sat through a seminar on it as a teacher and we did it an hour at a time over the course of several weeks (after school teacher meetings). It was interesting and I do find myself occasionally pulling up some of their principles when I am being tested by my children. I can't speak for the three hour seminar and if it is too much at one time, but I think you could get the basic idea in that three hours and carry through with just the written materials if it was something that worked for you. It is definitely not in everyone's nature to handle discipline problems with "love and logic" principles. Some people thought it was ridiculous and made fun of it the entire time, others seemed too into it and took it overboard. Like most things, in moderation I think it could come in handy. It is good to have tools in your parenting arsenal, because all kids are going to react differently!

I work at a HS for at risk students, this school year we are using Love and Logic, the school bought the entire program, at first some of the faculty laughed and made fun of it, but it has worked wonders. It has cut down on a lot of negative behaviors etc.. I thinks it's a great resource.

I am thinking of attending a workshop on this that I think is 7 weeks, 2 or 3 hours at a time.
I think it's like $110 for the workshop but you get the book too-whoopee right? But I do think I need this so I'm seriously trying to get SO on board I think if only I attend, it's pointless.

I agree both parents should be on board. For me, DH is a great parent and handles our kids good (not that there isn't always room for improvement). I really feel like I need help.

And DH is a reader, he is quiet and shy and would do better reading the program. Whereas I am a do-er and hate reading...and I do better when I see things and am shown things.

I considered getting the CD audiobook so I can listen to it in the car etc. That is $25, the 3 hr seminar is $30. Trying to decided which to do, or both?

We tried something simple after someone gave us an example with their kids. The gramma has a candy dish at her house and when her DD (who did the program) comes over with the grandkids they ask, mom can I have a piece of candy. She says yes. They ask how many. Mom says 1 or none. So it leaves the child in control of the deciding, works better than being told. So we tried it the other night.

The kids made a mess with some blocks. Actually it was DS but we are trying to do "help each other" in our house. Afterall mom/dad pick up messes they didn't make. Anyway the blocks are blue, red and yellow. Instead of telling DD to help pick up the blocks please. I asked her whether she would like to pick up the blue red or yellow blocks. Initially she says, I didn't make the mess Matthew did. I said I know but we all need to help clean it up. So you can pick which color or I will pick and you get to pick up 2 colors instead of 1. And without really any more arguing she says "fine, red" and picks them up.

OMG, it actually worked?! We tried it with other things throughout the evening and it works really good with both kids.

I took this several years ago in a 6 week class form at the beginning of my eldest's "junior high" experience, and wished I had heard of it much sooner! It was great, insightful, had tools that are STILL useful and customizable per age/stage/issue. My SIL took it with me, and has had great success with many methods for toddlers. The only warning/observation, nothing is "THE MANUAL" for childrearing, so all methods will not work for all kids or parents. It is however, a darn fine guide and very thought provoking. HTH.

im reading the book and about to take 1 day seminar in houston, my 5 yr old is becoming standoffish, typical of 5yr olds ive seen but would like to handle in a more democratic way like what ive read in book, but im a more hands on learning person so i think the seminar will be fun.
