Re: Bring A Dish
On the "return a container/dish full" idea, I grew up in Ohio and we ALWAYS did this. I had a neighbor once who couldn't cook and she returned it with gifts on it for my dds. When I moved to NC a neighbor brought over brownies and upon returning the dish she said in the south you don't return food dishes full but you do return visits.

Re: Bring A Dish
I've never done the return the dish full thing either.
We usually have a few friends over for holiday dinners, and they always ask if they can bring anything. I always say that I have stuff covered, to just bring anything particular they would like. They usually bring drinks, cause she likes unsweetened tea and he doesn't drink caffeine now, and at thanksgiving she brought a cranberry relish cause she knew I usually don't make a cranberry thing for that.
Personally, I was always taught you either bring something, or if you're told to absolutely not bring a darn thing, you do more than your fair share of some dishes and clean up.

Re: Bring A Dish
I always try to get people to take leftovers home with them. If I think about it, I'll ask them to bring something of their own to carry it out with, but if not, I'll scrounge up some kind of disposable/reusable container they can take. Actually, I beg and plead for people to take food home with them. I don't want to have to find somewhere to put it all!
