I have done a lot of research on BOOP cuz it was the first time I heard the term. However I see that BOOP itself USUALLY is not a death sentence and USUALLY is very responsive to meds.........unless you get the very rare form of it..........as was my uncles case. (Idiopathic Rapidly Progressive or Fulminant BOOP. This is a very rare form of BOOP. The duration of illness is generally a few days. It is a very serious form of the disease with severe symptoms and respiratory failure. Unfortunately, a high percentage of patients do not survive, but prompt initiation of corticosteroid therapy may be effective)
There is no known reason he got that and the fact that he went through everything with flying colors only to die so fast and very unexpectledy......well......it more than sucks.........he was more than 200 days past stem cell transplant. My aunt and mom had them to a lung autopsy so hopefully they can learn something and maybe find SOMETHING to stop this rare form or figure out the cause so at least someone else can hopefully be saved down the road.

I actually know exactly what BOOP is. It is Bronchiolitis Obliterans with Organizing Pneumonia... It is a form of Interstitial Lung Disease. Interstitial Lung Disease means the lungs are scarred in various ways and BOOP is a progressive disease. My 3 year old son has a different form of Interstitial Lung disease that only happens to young babies...but he was first thought to have BO...Bronchiolitis Obliterans before they did his CT Scan and realized that was not what it was (they have a different look on the scan).
The lung stuff is just crappy. Literally they can do a lot of things when different organs start to fail...but lungs are just a tough one...and transplants are rarely an option.
Please know we will keep your family in our prayers tonight.
I am so sorry for your loss. How kind of your family to think of others right now by allowing an autopsy to be done. You and your family are in my prayers. Hugs
