Default I might lose my job!

I am a state worker and the governer just announced they will have to lay off hundreds of workers at the beginning of next year.We just bought a new house a couple of months ago and recently got new furniture.Dont really think we will lose the house but things sure would be real tight. I'm worried cause I have only worked there for 1 year and there is only 1 person below me in seniority.

Start stockpiling all you can now so you will not have to worry about food. Then start stashing every extra cent you can away so you have a cushion if you do need to get another job.

In other words: Plan for the worst but hope for the best.

Good Luck

I hope you dont lose your job... thats a scary thought but here are some things I would do now just incase it were to happen.

1. Sit down and write out all my bills and what the payments are.

2. Can you afford each bill without your income?

3. Reduce bills for un-needed items... example: Drop a cell phone or home phone or reduce insurance costs by changing your deductibles. ect.

4. Are there any big cost items that can be returned without a large penalty? Cars ect..?

5. Start saving as much money as possible now.

6. Have a yard sale or list items for sale in online auctions to make extra money.

These are the things I would start doing now... They may also be things you already do or are preparing to do so sorry if its nothing new for ya but I really hope you wont lose the job! Good Luck!

Thank you. I know a lot of other people are going through the same thing but last December the governer told us he would NOT cut law enforcement or corrections! Guess he changed his mind.

I'm so sorry. Stockpile. It makes a big difference when unemployed. I hope this works out for you!

The silver lining in all this is definitely the advance warning. Everyone has given you great suggestions. I think it is important to get your finances in order every 6 months anyways, and this si a good opportunity to take a hard look at your bills. I agree with working on your resume and also starting to network with people you know to see what possibilities might be out there. A good friend of mine was told her position would probably be cut last summer, she began actively looking for a job and founf a better position. She quit her job before they let her go, and then it turned out that her department was not cut at all. It will all work out.

My current job pays well but my "heart" isn't in it. Maybe I will get to keep it or maybe it's a chance to do something I will like better.

So sorry. We have been watching as the money short fall gets higher and higher. 10% across the board is really going to hurt everyone. Get as prepared as you can and stay positive. Start looking for another job before this one ends. I've been looking for over a year now. Some of the state workers here said they will be out of work before Christmas.
