My kids are recovering from the swine flu now. My daughter came home sick from school on Friday with a high fever, then my oldest started feeling sick Saturday night and then my baby started feeling bad on Monday night. DH and I are taking the tamiflu to prevent us from getting it. I think the reason so many people are panicking is because of the hype that that media was/is giving it. It wasn't as bad as everyone said it was gonna be, its just like having the regular flu just with a fancy name. With the proper medication and handwashing and all that jazz, you recover w/i 2-3 days. But my doctor still recommended that my kids still get the regular flu shot (mist) which I have them scheduled for next week and I'm getting mine as well. Everyone has their own beliefs and issues with everything so we just have to deal with it and go on and not argue or debate about it. Best of luck to everyone and I hope you all stay safe.

This is the problem i have with all you sitting here espousing these "fear mongering" beliefs you have been fed. You don't think outside of yourselves, believe me there are many more people you can and will hurt in this situation. I know I am talking in extremes but honestly people. By all means i am not trying to start a debate, but i think that what you said was in itself doing exactly what you are accusing those of us who don't choose to vaccine for swine flu or any disease for that matter as only thinking of ourselves. If you have compromised health, have done the research behind swine flu and the vaccine, have discussed the risks vs. benefits with your healthcare provider, then by all means, get the vaccine. The problem behind your statement is that you are subtley accusing those who will choose not to vaccinate of others health problems, which is ludicris. If you believe in germ theory and the immuniological effects a vaccine has on a person, ie if you, yourself get the vaccine then you will be immune, then what is it that you are worried about if my family chooses not to get the vaccine as we have done the research and have decided that our health is at greater jeopardy by getting this newly created vaccine than encountering the virus it is trying to prevent?

On a side note, I know no one personally that have been injuried by vaccines, but that doesn't stop me from researching the subject, and supporting the side that demands justice for those that have been. If that is selfish then i guess that is me.:shrug7:

here's a link from another site that explains the national vaccine injury compensation program http://www.mothering.com/health/national-vaccine-injury-compensation-program

Here is a link for those interested in learning about those that have been injured by vaccines. HRSA - National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program

I have spent countless hours researching the subject of vaccines and weighing the pros and cons on whether they should be adminstered my family or not, not only thinking of myself, but others that i may come into contact with. When those in my family are ill, we do not proceed as nothing is wrong, i do not take my feverish toddler to walmart to cough all over the handle in the basket, etc. So in that we are helping those that have compromised immune systems, by staying at home, in bed...

I am amazed by how many people say they aren't getting either vaccine. I am more amazed by SOME (not all) but some of their reasons - namely one that I am reading alot is "I don't like shots," Now personally I don't care either way about shots - it's two seconds and it doesn't even hurt - how you are going to feel if you get the flu - in the bathroom for days - is going to be 1000 times worse than that two second shot.... now the cost factor - flu vaccine is anywhere between 20 and 25 bucks at any pharmacy - that's without insurance... cost for the doctor visit and the medicine to get you well if you get the flu - is alot more than 20 - 25 dollars, just a fact.... And I know everyone has the right to chose to get or not get the vaccine - that's true - but it's upseting when I work with people who refuse to get the vaccine - but then come to work sick thinking - "it's nothing contagious" and come to find out, they got the flu and expose everyone else... or go to the grocery store coughing and running a fever and expose everyone else... that only makes this stuff spread even more...

I don't believe personally in taking a "lot" of medication. I don't injest pain relievers for every headache (but do if it does not go away naturally after a good bit of time) or every ache and pain. I shun cold relief medicines because they mask and do not cure.

On the other hand, I do advocate vaccinations for childhood diseases.

Unless there was a true (and there has never been one in my lifetime) epidemic, I will not choose to take any flu shot.

Selah, thank you for your warm concern. I have been on medical house arrest before about 3 yrs ago. I couldn't leave the house not due to any thing I had but due to the possibility of what I might come in contact if I left the house. You see it is not a "if you think like this" issue... it is how my body is. I am not alone, there are thousands of us....

When I was young, I rarely took any type of medicine. I rarely ever went to the doctor, even when I was sick. The only time I could remember going to the doctor was when I got the mumps & chicken pox. I believe, because of this, I rarely get sick. My body used it's own defenses to keep me well.

On the other hand, my wife was pumped full of meds during her childhood, and she is now contantly sick. She was on a regular regiment of Benadryl & Penicillin, and her body was never given the opportunity to recognize the problem and create a way to kill it.

That being said, we have raised our kids like I was raised. If they get something, we let their body fight off whatever it is. Our kids are now 8 & 9, and I can count on one hand how many times they've been sick in the last 5 years.

Our society has become so relient on their "meds." Our body as the ablility to fight off almost anything, and the flu included. I mean, really, why do you think there is so much on TV regarding viruses that are now becoming immune to the "meds."

I shall let my body do the fighting, and I shall boost my immune system by my previously mentioned method.

YOu make a very good point about immune systems.

When my first son was born, I lysoled EVERYTHING. My dad came to visit for the first time and told me that my DS would be living in a bubble if I kept it up. He needed SOME exposure to build an immune system. *some.. infants CAN get REALLY sick*

Also, in Europe, they have used the watch and wait method for ear infections. Over the last 15 years, kids have had FAR LESS of them than USA kids. WHy? Antibiotics. They eat away bacteria. The good and bad equally.
    1. MOST ear infections are viral. AN antibiotic is USELESS to them. All you are doing is killing off the good bacteria in your kids body and slowing down recovery time.
    2. THe more a kid is pumped full of anitbiotics, the less his/her body created the antibiodies to fight infection on their own. Therefore, they catch more illness.
    3. Parents HERE, practically DEMAND antibiotics for ear infections. And many pediatricians and family physicians have become complacent to these demands. Its easier to give it and shut the parent up. Problem is, that parents doesn't have a CLUE what they are REALLY doing to their kid.

How many parents who take their 1 year old into the DR with a 103 temp want to leave with no meds? Be told to simply treat the pain with tylenol, and wait it out? Almost NONE. Even though it is the BEST way of doing it.

WHen my DD was 6 months to 2 years, she got ear infections one after the other. Each time, her pediatrician put her on an antibiotic, she would EVENTUALLY get better... next month... ANOTHER one... stronger antibiotics, etc...I did my research, talked to a couple DO's, and STOPPED the antibiotics. SHe had one or 2 more... EVER. She's almost FIVE now.

Katncaed... your wife never got better because of the Penicillin... the benadry is nothing but a symptom treater... has no effect on the bacteria that fights the bad stuff. Its like Tylenol. Use it all you want, won't harm your immune system.

As far as the flu shot... your theory is a bit wrong. The flu shot is essentialy a tiny dose OF THE FLU. Not enough to get (most) people sick, but JUST enough for the body to BUILD the natural IMMUNITY to the virus. Tiny dose of exposure.
