QUESTION Cigarette tax...enough to make you quit??

I keep hearing of a new cigarette tax coming that will be sky high so I did some research.
On February 4, 2009, Congress enacted, and President Obama signed into law, a 62-cent increase in the federal cigarette tax, along with increases in other tobacco taxes, to fund expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). The federal cigarette tax will increase to $1.01 per pack on March 31, 2009.
I'm wondering if this will be enough to make people stop smoking or will you pay whatever they want for you to indulge the habit?
(hmmm. Will this end up in hutc??)
I'd appreciate your prayers during a very hard transition in my life. TYVVM

my husband went yesterday to buy cig's, came home and told me they had gone up $6/carton, I was like wth? he said that the store employee told him it is all tax, I said we need to quit. But, I doubt we will, yes the money is an incentive but it is very hard to stop.

I believe it's going up again too. Here in ga it's went up about $10 a carton so far. I'm so glad I don't smoke.

It makes no sense. If taxes go up on cigarettes & people stop smoking, then where will they get the tax dollars from?

It gets worse. If you roll your own, it's going up by $24 per pound of tobbaco. Here in PA it's currently (for the cheaper stuff) $12 p/ pound. So, it'd be $36 per pound when the tax kicks in. We're stocking up but DH is gonna have to quit.
I'm wondering if they'll decide to charge a federal "cover charge" at casinos at some point. I wouldn't put it past them.

My parents roll their own cigs and they are very mad about it. My dad has been smoking electronic cigarettes for about 2 months now, and with the $24 increase my mom is (reluctantly) thinking about switching to e-cigs also.

That said, I think most people will probably keep smoking... it is very difficult to quit. It's an expensive habit, anyways. I could see people trying to cut back a bit, though, for sure.

I was just behind someone in line Wed night who bought a pack in NH since it is normally cheaper than in ME (coincidentally he lived near me but stopped on the way home from work). They already went up there as well and he was absolutely aghast. I just looked at him and went "its a sign you need to quit" lol.

I think some people who are more addicted to the physical act of smoking than the nicotine will quit and turn to something else. Some people will continue to smoke and just trade more for coupons or find other ways to afford their habit.
