[quote=puakinikini;1506963]We have a converter box and now get about 12 channels, which is great b/c we used to only get 5.

I have to chime in here because it's so true........!!! DH and I literally got only NBC here in our apt until we got our converter box. I think we have around 20 now, provided it's not cloudy or a plane isn't flying over!
Even still we RARELY watch TV (only The Office, usually a whopping 1/2 hr/wk).
In any case, we get by with plenty to do besides internet or TV. OP, im not sure where you live, but we live in Philadelphia. We often go to the Museums on free days (and some are always free), utilize the parks (it's amazing how much fun you can have with a few hot dogs, a small grill and a kite on a spring/fall afternoon). In any case, even if you don't live in a big city, I am sure there are places you haven't explored. You could pick up a book from AAA (if you have a membership) of your own state and see what's free. Another idea if you have a college near you is to see what events/lectures they have that are free and open to the public. I know that the school I went to had LOTS. Most people just didn't know about.
We often also do puzzles (after all, we buy the sunday paper right?) play cards, and visit with our friends/family (nothing super "organized", just chatting/caching up).
You could also consider utilizing some of your great finds to trade for sports tix, concert tix, etc.
Ok, it's getting long, but one more tip to make it possible to hold onto the internet is.... do you have a neighbor that also has it? You could both go in for a wireless router and share internet. This way you can both have, at half the cost. It's a win/win.

We don't have cable either!! We have the good old bunny ears with a converter box now and you'd be surprised the channels you get!
We do have high speed internet though but DH & I both work from home at times and we need it. We have to justify it because the convienience for us is worth much more.
In the cold winter months we do a lot of puzzles too, and read books. We also do a lot of baking! My son loves to help me! There's many other things you can do. Good luck.
Do you know what you started? I just came here to party!
We do have t.v. and internet but I could survive without the t.v. - as ong as I have my precious (yeah, I called it precious =) ) Internet cable connection.
I agree with the library idea. It's free and you can go whenever (accept ours has weird hours) Can you just do without the t.v. and try to swing internet?
To me, internet is more vital though. GL!!

Netflix. It's like $13/month for 2 DVDs at a time, unlimited, and a couple bucks more for 3 at a time, unlimited. Super cheap, you'll have a lot of the series on DVD at your fingertips, plus lots of movie selection.
