Default Cutting your own hair--tell me your experiences

This is one item that really aggravates me. About every 5 weeks I need a haircut, and never have the money.

My hair is very short, like a man's, and it looks terrible when it starts to get long and lanky.

I bought some electric clippers one time, said I would cut it myself, but chickened out. I imagined I would look like Beaver Cleaver on the episode where he and Wally cut his hair, and he came out bald.

All the shops around here charge around $15 and up, and that is money that I need for other things. While this is not a problem of earth-shattering importance, it is one that keeps me aggravated.

I found a lady at the local WM salon who does a wonderful cut. However. She is only there a few days a week, for a few hours, and it is always changing.
    That is another aggravation.

The urge is so strong right now to go get the clippers and just cut it off.
I feel bad with a runny, watering, semi-sick head anyhow that I don't want to go out in the cold, cold air to travel to WM.

If you have ever cut your own hair with clippers, how did you manage the back? How do you blend the top into the sides?

    Inquiring minds want to know.
    Thank you.

I cut my bangs once. when I was about 7. not a good experience!
also tried cutting my bangs (which had grown to about chin length, cut them to about cheek length).... when I was about 22. not a good experience either, and I thought wow how hard can this be??
I would never try again! I would personally call the walmart salon and ask when your favorite stylist is working ;)

sorry. that is probably not much help at all!!!!

I cut my own bangs all the time and the ends (shoulder-length or longer) a few times a year. Have you looked into the flowbee (sp?)? You might also try finding somebody who'll barter services. My MIL goes to a hairdresser's house every other week, as she doesn't want to drive all the way to the shop, a much longer commute.

Since my hair is long, I cut it in the shower... lol... when its completely wet, I bend at the waist and flip my hair over, comb it straight, then take the scissors and cut across... lol... this will leave my hair in some layers and in a U shape... then after the shower, I part it down the middle and comb it to the sides and start trimming any that might've gotten missed and make minor alterations to it... and there you go... lol... hair is trimmed... lol... however, when I was about 12 I started cutting my brother's (2) hair with the clippers... it seemed easy enough, but so I wouldnt leave them jacked up, I started with the size 4 attachment and then worked my way down to either a 3 or 2, depending on how they wanted it... then I'd just fix up the sides and neck with no attachment... lol... GOOD LUCK!
