| Re: Buy sugar now, price going up *pets stack of 6 plastic sugar containers* I stocked up a couple months ago when it was under $1 I think per container, either the plastic tub or 5lb bag.

Notice how those commercials say "in moderation" but how are we only suppose to consume it in moderation when it's in EVERYTHING! It's literally in every packaged food on the shelf! The only thing I'm able to avoid it with is juice. I only buy Juicy Juice and other 100% juices. But I don't cook much and rely on packaged foods a lot so it's really hard for me to consume it in "moderation" I've heard that other countries don't have this problem. I do make an effort to avoid it though, but I still eat way more than I want to. Especially with the Kellogg's deals we had when the back to school coupons came out. I'm still eating the Pop Tarts and Nutri-Grain bars from those sales, both have HFCS in them. I know I need to cook more fresh foods, but I just don't have the time or energy. Especially when I'd just be cooking it for myself since my boyfriend is a very picky eater and won't eat anything. The best I do is the microwave Green Giant boxed vegetables.
anyways back to the topic of sugar... it takes me a whole year or longer to use a whole 2 lb bag of suger, I don't drink Kool-aid or bake... I just use it for coffee.. but I'm going to buy a 5lb bag at kroger this week because it's $2.00 with the mega event discount and I have a .50 coupon that will triple making it .50! |

| Re: Buy sugar now, price going up Don't overlook this, also: Everything that has sugar in it will go up now, too. Cake mixes to jelly to cereal. This will be used as a convenient excuse to raise the price, whether it is justified or not. Don't forget about using honey or syrups for sweeteners. Honey never goes bad. Better for you, too.
There is a report out on Yahoo News about food prices to go up dramatically in 2009. I don't see any need in even posting it, as we know its going to happen. It is worrisome, and scary. Get everything you can now, and put it by. If you have a freezer, fill it. If its full, get another one and fill it. |

| Re: Buy sugar now, price going up I guess the price of sugar depends on where you live. I live in NC and a 2# bag of sugar is $1.59. I am fortunate to have grocery stores that double and sometimes triple coupons so I ended up getting over 40lbs of white sugar for free AND an additioal 13lbs of brown sugar for free too.
I read the article that Julie sent out yesterday saying to buy sugar, flour, meats, grains/pasta and paper products now because the price is going to go high. She said that flour where she lives is $4.59! OUCH! and that a loss leader is $1.50. I checked the price of Flour at my store today. It normally is $2.89 and is on sale for $2.00 (and this is at a store that is known for it's high prices). I remember last year my store had Pillsbury flour for $.69 during one weekend limit 2, so it must have been a loss leader, but for her to say $1.50 is a loss leader shocked me.
I was shocked when I read on this thread where people say they are willing to pay $1.50 for 5lbs of sugar. Our regular price for some 5# bags of sugar is $1.99 (I think it was off brand) and the brown sugar was $.99 for 1#. I don't use as much sugar as some, but I do bake a lot so I do use probably 15-20lbs of sugar a year.
