Default Advice Needed: Gum disease Toddler

About a week ago I took my son to the 24 hour emergency clinic. I already knew what was wrong with him. He had a fever. the only time that happens is when he has an ear infection.

anyway he was prescribed Omnicef.

Forward to a couple days ago. I noticed his mouth was bleeding, he was screaming..I thought he bit the inside of his mouth?

today i notice what appears to be a bite mark on the inside of his bottom lip..then later on he had blood on his teeth again.

i take him to go brush his teeth and blood starts gushing out of his mouth!!

i take him to the 24 hr er clinic again.

he tells me that my son has gum disease.. WTH?? he's 2!

I just don't feel satisfied with that.

That wouldnt just all of a sudden start happening would it? this was no small amount, it was literally gushing from his mouth.

i was looking up omnicef and it says to seek medical attention if "unusual bleeding" occurs.

i'm having probs with my sons insurance right now, so i can't make him an appointment with the dr for probably about a week.

Any advice?? should i stop giving the omnicef and see if that stops it?

my brother has me worried that my son has some sort of immune problem thats making him more susceptible to stuff.

wow, I have never heard of that in a toddler. I would not wait to take him in, see if you can get him in a dentist asap, explain your insurance situation to them and they might work out payment plans with you

It's been a lot of years ago but my son did have a gum infection when he was around six. He ran a fever and complained that his throat hurt. The Dr. put him on an antibiotic, of course this was on a Friday by Monday he was really miserable and had sores all over his mouth. The Dr. put him on a stronger antibiotic and he rinsed his mouth with peroxide and water. When the infection was gone I had to take him to the dentist and have his teeth cleaned.

Me either!! I can't even find anything doing a google search of cases where a toddler has had gum disease. I really don't think that is what it is at all. He seems to be doing better today. I didnt give him any of the omnicef today, and last night i did try to do what the dr suggested with salt water..he said to try and get him to gargle and spit but i knew that wasnt going to happen so i just dipped his toothbrush in salt water and brushed around his mouth.

So far today no bleeding..THANK GOODNESS!

I guess tomorrow morn i can try and get him in to the dentist. He does have insurance but I havent gotten his card yet.

feed him canned pumpkin and carrots to help with the ear infection. You can make pumpkin custard to help him eat it. My mom used to make pumpkin pie filling and bake it in single serve dishes. A couple days of feeding him lots of pumpkin and carrots should get you some good results without the anti-biotics.

can't help with any other suggestions.

ERs and 24 hour clinics are the band-aids of the medical field - they are meant only to stabalize a critically sick or injured person until they can be seen by a physician who can diagnose the problem. They are usually staffed by general practicioners who are used to treating emergency situations that are generally very obvious to diagnose, and gum disease would be the "obvious" answer for bleeding gums. Bleeding gums is a symptom of many other issues though - take your DS to his pediatrician ASAP so that medical tests can be run.

Good grief girl, that sounds like the weirdest thing I've heard of.
What have they been eating?
Is your toddler sucking on a bottle all day? (or anything else?)

How do children get gingivitis? Are you brushing his little teeth?
If it doesn't hurt, can they gargle or rinse their mouths with salt water? (kill germs but won't hurt if they swallow a little...just tastes gross)

How can it be contagious? Are their mouths on the same things? Like drinking from the same glass all day or something?

Have you gone to get this checked out again?
Get a second opinion?

Yellow bumps and a fever...I really don't want to scare you, but girl,
I don't know. That doesn't sound good at all.
Is it just on her gums, or the inside of her cheeks? down her throat?

I have to go brush my teeth now.

I have no IDEA!! I'm trying to get them both in to the doctor, so far they've only bee able to get into directcare

I'm wondering if my sons ear infection and high fever made him susceptible to infections.

they brush their teeth often, and unfortunately my DD used her brothers toothbrush on accident and well there ya go. I feel so bad for her. she is just miserable. She hasnt been to school all week.

Which reminds me i gotta call the school and get her homework ready to pick up and call the darn doctor again!!

btw my dd has been gargling the salt water atleast 3 times a day. and my son now seems to be fine.
