You are SO right. I think it is a waste but its on the school supply list. Also listed is 2 Large containers of Clorox Wipes. The teacher told me she uses them to wipe up the desks after the kids all get done eating their FREE breakfast. I told her I did not want her feeding my kid breakfast, thats a parents job, not the schools.
The only thing I want to mention is that the chemicals found in hand sanitizer and wipes are more harmful than the germs the kids can spread at times. I don't like the idea of replacing hand soap--which is washed clean away--with hand sanitizer.
btw I have an autistic nephew, and a son who has ADHD. You would be surprised at what things such as that can worsen the health of the kids-mind and body.
A little vinegar diluted in water can work wonders.
Sorry I know that was off the subject a little. I just believe that getting back to basics would be a healthier/cheaper way to go.
Wow...I would love to be able to send a school supply list home. If the school doesn't have it, we supply it.. The $$ I spend is less than when I began, but I still spend, but I hit those sales hard. You better get there before me!!! When I left the classroom I still had supplies for 2 classes of 20 kids. Not all districts have our policy. Some buy it because it makes them happy, others learn to improvise. I just got smarter. I also made it a point to mention how much I love supplies to the kids. You know how they bring little trinkets, I just ask for a class pencil or some tissues. :)

Still working to get there eventually!

I quit long time ago with those list. I spentd 25.00 this year on school supplies.ANd he does not even have a lst yet. They do need all that stuff to learn.

I used to be a super mom,but 5 years ago i quit. All the money they waste printing out those list which will be all over every store they could save and but some of that stuff.I used to send extra stuff,i used to hunt but i quit.A 3 inch binder is not going to make you learn no better that a 2 inch binder. The school can get a better price by buying wholesale.A year book is all most 90.00 dollar. They give our kids a planner,if they lose it it is 5.00 dollars to replace it.NO a parent is not lazy to buy all that stuff or cheap just smart.

I assume you are pointing this finger at me since I was the only one mentioning the cable but you need to make sure you read my posts again. another pp was calling someone lazy and cheap I did not I was talking about the people who refuse to send even the basics just because they dont want to. I agree with the pps over sending the nonsense items, and I also agree that a lot of things should be provided by the school with our tax $ and are not. but I do believe its because some parents will send nothing at all that we end up with crazy lists. I was actually talking about someone I know IRL who has every luxury and sits on the computer and watches tv and smokes cigarettes all day and will not even go out and buy pencils or glue for her kids shed rather someone else take care of her kids. All 5 of them. She is not rich nor poor she is just a deadbeat mom and could care less about what her kids ned for school. And sadly there are a lot of people like that out there. The reason I even clarified that in the 2nd post (or tried to anyway) was as not to be grouped in with someone calling every person who didnt provide the entire list cheap, lazy jerks. I do not feel that way.Just trying to make the point of atleast we care enough to send something even if its not the exact list as there are a lot of people who will send nothing and then we have to make up for it..........

I don't mind paying for the stuff, but I hate shopping for it! I wish I could just send in $ instead.
WOW. This thread really kept going, didn't it. I apologize for my post being a bit crass yesterday. I really meant it rather tongue in cheek, but obviously I cannot type emotion or intent. Sorry for those who were offended. I did; however, intend for my post to show the other side of the issue. In the handful of schools that my twins attended, I would say roughly 33% of the parents supplied 99% of the school supplies.
As some teachers have made points, there are uses for these supplies that we may not have foreseen. I'm not a teacher so if they tell me that my kid needs some coffee filters or a box of baby wipes, sobeit. I pay exhorbitant taxes and I cannot single-handedly fix the enter school district's budget problems, but I will do everything I can to ensure that a teacher making $40K (deserving $100K) has everything he/she may need to teach my child. Unfortunately, that means making up for kids who do not have the basic supplies.
Our children are getting a very inexpensive education. Imagine for a second if you actually had to pay tuition and didn't get tax dollars from businesses, households who have no children, the government? We would be paying THOUSANDS per year per child. We don't. Instead, I paid around $10K for my real estate taxes and only a portion of that went to the school. I'll take that any day.
