Thats absurd. You most certainly can use coupons on clearance items. As long as the coupon was less than the item, there is no reason you could not have used it. I would be calling CS on that on Monday.
My store had Energizer batteries on clearance for $2-$3 for jumbo packs, i had a $1 off printable coupon x2, and i was told i could not use them???!!! They said in order to ring up the batteries at the clearance price they have to ring it up as a "taxable item" not "Energizer" batteries, so the coupon would not be found and just beeped. The manager on duty came up and said nope it just can't be done. I told them i have used coupons on clearanced items before this makes no sense. They just handed me back the coupons and charged me for the batteries. Kinda annoyed at the whole situation, i had a great deal going on, and still had to pay $$oop, which i was not even planning on doing. I told them i would just contact CVS when i got home, but do i have a case or should i just eat it?

i know but, they said it was the way they have to ring it up,,,"taxable item" so energizer is nowhere on teh computer screen, (she turned the screen so i could see that no energizer was rang up) totally not my problem on how they ring the stupid thing up. I already sent an email to CS it said she should respond within 2 business days, thanks for your help

If it is on clearance with a black marked line over it, Cvs will not let you use a coupon on it. That has been there policy for a long time. The item is not on their inventory at that point.
But its obvious you bought the correct item for the coupon and they can force it thru, they just choose not too. Thats the whole problem as I see it. Good Luck!!
Do you have another CVS you can go to? I would go to that other store take your batteries your receipt and the coupons and see if they can give you the money back. I have done that in many cases at different stores, I forgot my coupons, they give you the money back.
Or maybe what you can do is call back later and talk with a different Mngr and see what they say, just a thought.
Wow. They're wrong. I bought 9 bottles of Downy for .76 each and 1.93 (I think it was) for one, and I used one 1.50/1 coupon for every two of the .76 ones and one for other. They all rang in just fine. Didn't beep. I also used a coupon for the clearance WISK that was .84 and I had a 1.00 coupon. You're still buying the product.
Even when I got a clearance Secret deodorant at my grocery store that had a new sticker over top of it that said, "taxable non-food item," they just keyed in my 50 cent coupon. *shrug*
Just another nobody in the midst of all the somebodies.
i have never heard this before! And they did have the black line through it, they said they don't carry them anymore, so they ring it up taxable item so that i cannot bring them back and return them. I still think its not my problem the way they have to ring it up, i had the matching coupon to the item...huh...shrug...who the heck knows. i sent and email to CS so i will let you all know what they say when i get a response

CVS has 3 different ways of clearancing an item:
1. green (or other color) price sticker on the barcode
2. black sharpie line through barcode
3. On shelf, no markings on/through barcode
Options 1 & 2 will NOT accept a coupon, because the item does not "scan". They manually key in the price of the product as a taxable item or a non-taxable item. However, they still "should" be able to manually enter a coupon.
I have not personally called corporate as to inquire about coupon usage on the non-scannable items because I haven't found any good clearance stuff that I wanted - lol.
Scannable items (option #3 above) will accept coupons. Those items still scan in as the product (ie: Downy .76 will accept a coupon, versus "taxable item .76" will not).
HTH. I would definately call corporate though to get an "official" answer as to options #1 & #2 above in regards to coupons.

I too tried to use a coupon on altered barcode clearance. Told CVS does not accept coupons on clearance items; they will not receive the value of the coupon from the manufacturer.
That's fine. I've given all my business to Rite Aid.
