I live in KCMO area and once decided to try a new CVS on the way home from school (KCKS) for the Sun - Tues deals. I was used to paying ZERO OOP, because I always have enough different denominations to get the pre-tax amount pretty close, then let them adjust the last ECB down a few cents if necessary. Then after all coupons and EBCs, I still had to pay around $4 in tax. I couldn't believe it! I almost put it all back, but remembered the store near me was OOS on most of what I got there.

I guess I should count my blessings and be glad the law in MO says you don't pay tax on free!!

In TX we only pay tax on the after coupon amount. No matter what kind of coupon it is. So I never pay taxes at CVS
I smell a coupon! Did someone cut one?

Just keep in mind that under most state law, if you do not pay local sales tax on an item, you are required to pay it to the state as use tax. For example, if you buy a product out of state or from an online retailer and do not pay your home state's income tax on that item, you are, in theory, supposed to remit the difference between the tax you would have paid if ou purchased it instate as compared to the amount actually paid to your home state (its called use tax). Assume you buy a product for $10 out of state and bring it back into your state for use in your state and do not pay any sales tax on the item. Your state has a 10% tax. You should remit $1 to your state in use tax.

Do individuals do that - most likely not.
