QUESTION Extra Care Buck wouldn't work

Hi

Sorry if this is a rookie question, but I read the FAQ and couldn't find the answer.

I did a transaction at CVS today. My total was like $5.35. I gave them a $5 ECB but the register would not accept it. It would accept my $1 ECB though.

Is the reason because part of my original total was tax and I can't use ECB on tax or is there some other reason? I could not figure it out and paid more OOP than I wanted to.

Thanks in Advance!
Julie

Maybe your total before tax was under $5. Some cashier will adjust your $5ECB to the total amount and some will refuse to take it. Next time you can ask the cashier the reason then ask her/him to adjust your ECB. Sometimes I get zero balance after the cashier adjusts my ECB and sometimes I still have to pay the tax. Never know CVS's system.

My store will automatically adjust it to the correct amount usually without consulting the customer. If your total minus tax was less than $5 (your ECB), it will not take it.

Ask the cashier for your pre-tax total. If it is below but close to the $5ECB amount just ask the cashier to adjust it and pay the sales tax only.

Some cashiers are nice and will tell you what it is before tax. I like that so I can add something to my order.

A couple times I have had them adjust it with out saying anything and I could have put in some gum instead of losing it.

Tax is often more than I think it will be.

You can throw in something cheap and it will take the $5 ECB. this week, my cheap item is the Snow's clams for 77¢.

Two cans make an absolutely delicious linguine and clam sauce. We always have free pasta in the house, so this makes dinner for $1.54. I have a really easy recipe, Friday night my SO is in charge of dinner and that's what he makes. Throw in a can of free biscuits too.

Thanks for the responses. I think my pre-tax total must have been below $5.

Yep, the tax certainly adds up because generally (there may be exceptions) you are required to pay tax on the full value of the items. SO, if your tax rate is 6% and your total is $20.00, then you give them $17.00 in coupons then your total would be $4.20 ($3.00+$1.20 tax on the whole total). That used to confuse me and always messed up my scenarios and oop totals until I finally just started figuring in the tax for myself.

^It depends on your state. In MA, coupons reduce the taxable amount, so I often pay 0.00 or my ECBs are adjusted by a penny.
