There was an issue with Gift Cards being cloned and then used, so entering the last 4 digits shown on the cards makes sure the card is genuine

The cashiers are not just making up things. My CVS recently got new flat-screen/touch-pad thingies (Okay, I don't know what they're called, but it's the little unit where you see the purchase ring up/enter your PIN/select gift card, debitcard, etc.) that actually say "please hand your card to cashier" on the screen after swiping a money card. I asked the young guy waiting on me why they do that, and he said it was "for security or to prevent fraud or something".

I've been using a money card for months at CVS and I've never had them look at the bad of the card before the transaction could be completely.
