Sales tax is a state thing -- so it depends on your state.
How do you know if an item is taxable or not? I think OTC medicine are not taxable but sometimes I have been way negative and have to grab some fillers to cover the overage because of the way I calculate stuff.
for any insight anyone can provide.

In Illinois, OTC drugs are taxable.

When I posted this question, I was thinking there must be a way CVS codes their items. Like for CVS brands, the bar code starts with 50428. If a CVS tag started with a 4, would that mean it's not taxable? I'm using this as an example as the eye drops I bought started with 4.
NO, that has nothing to do with it.
All the things in the stores have the same bar codes. It isn't like a box of aspirin has a different UPC in CA than the UPC in IL. What makes it taxable or not is your state law. In each state, the register program has to be different to recognize whether a box of aspirin is a taxable item.
The only stickers ( tags ) we put on any items is the security stickers, so I can't help with this one, sorry.
