I went into my local store the other night and they were looking at my coupons very carefully. Then the asst. manager mentions that they recently fired a person over coupon fraud! :sad: I couldn't believe it, she didn't go into it and I didn't ask. I told them I am always very careful with mine and I was sorry that happened. The cashier actually apologized because it was taking a while, but I told her I could totally understand her trying to be careful. Yikes!
The manager (yes, the manager!) and a cashier were fired about a year ago for coupon fraud at a CVS that I shop at. I don't know exactly what they were doing, but they were both in it together.
I would think that if a store employee was fired because of coupon fraud it was probably them turning in coupons for items that they did not sell or cashiers using coupons and taking cash from the register. I would guess it was not anything to do with the acceptance of fraudulent coupons. Unless of course the store employee knowingly accepted fake coupons or took coupons that they were not supposed to.
Most actual coupon fraud, the kind that is prosecuted in the courts is stores or clearing houses and is not consumers. The big time fraud is usually stores and clearing houses purchasing large lots of coupons and sending them in for redemption. That is why there are restrictions on large lots of coupons on eBay and what not...to make it harder for stores and clearing houses to purchase the coupons. The average Suzy or Joe coupon user is not the real problem. So a customer that accidentally uses an expired coupon is not the big deal and of course it is up to us and the cashiers to check the expiration dates on coupons and if they are expired to not use them. And of course it would be outright rude and wrong to make a fuss at a cashier when you have accidentally given them an expired coupon. I did this today at Walmart, I read the numbers wrong I thought the coupon expired 11/12/09 and it expired 11/02/09. When the cashier pointed it out I apologized and told her I misread the coupon. I asked her to remove the 2 items from my order and to toss the coupons for me. Not that big of a deal.

This happened at our local Walgreens too - the clerk was fired for making photocopies of coupons that people brought in and then running them through her register for cash. Had nothing to do with customers at all. The local loss prevention manager told me that the vast majority of coupon fraud is cashiers not customers.
