It's possible that a coupon(s) didn't ring right and it was added instead of subtracted, or some other glitch. Or she may have bought an item(s) that food stamps actually didn't cover.
As stated before, every store chain handles food stamps and coupons differently. It's best to figure out how stores handle them and act accordingly.
