Thanks, that's what I figured. I didn't want to try it just in case.

I'd be careful because my sister in law used coupons at walmart and food lion and didn't buy any non food items and had to pay for using coupons $5.00 cash. The coupons were around $10.00 savings but 5 is a lot of money when you don't have it. They said they charge for using coupons.

My guess is that she had some food items that were 'meant to eat in the store' which are not covered by FS. I could be wrong but I doubt the stores would/could get away with charging to use coupons. That kind of defeats the purpose and with us die hard couponers, someone would have caused a stink by now...LOL

That sounds like it should be illegal.

I'll search the Texas food stamp website and see if I can find anything about using coupons.

When you use some winetags .Some of them will screw up your balance due to the coding.
Kmarts,Walgreens,Target you have to pay the tax on the coupons because they are considered cash.
I passed a Dolar Tree store the other day that had a sign on the door :WE Take EBT.That was news to me.The one next to my house does not say that.

There may be different laws regarding this depending on the state. But I do know that some states charge sales tax on the value of the coupons. It sounds like the registers may not be set up properly because that's 50% and that doesn't sounds right. It's possible that a coupon(s) didn't ring right and it was added instead of subtracted, or some other glitch. Or she may have bought an item(s) that food stamps actually didn't cover.

As stated before, every store chain handles food stamps and coupons differently. It's best to figure out how stores handle them and act accordingly.

There is no tax on food in Texas so I don't think they would make you pay tax on MQ's.

I am so happy to read this post. I to recently applied for FS and just got approved 3 weeks ago. I wish I would have read this then so I would have known I could use them at CVS.

I had this same problem in Oklahoma when I lived there a couple years back. I was at a Walmart Neighborhood Market and had just started couponing. I bought only my normal food items and used only 1 Q. I ended up paying a little less than a dollar when I should have paid nothing at all. The cashier told me that they charge tax on the coupon that has to be paid OOP. Needless to say, I was struggling at the time financially so paying ANYTHING OOP was a no go for me and i stopped collecting Q's.

I live in Texas now so its great to hear they don't charge tax here. And even better to hear I might be able to use an EBT card at CVS. I also just applied for FS...

I wish I had applied sooner. AFTER I applied, I learned that Texas has a dire shortage of social workers, and it's an average of 70 days from the time you apply until you get the ebt card.

I only applied about 3 weeks ago and I'm getting a little desperate here....
