OK, so I go back to the store that had found the tear pad and left it at the counter, and the checker says he doesn't know anything about it, and I say, "Really? Cuz they just found it for me a week or so ago and were supposed to keep it up here at the registers."

Lo and behold, it WAS there after all. Be persistent! and friendly!
