CVS- Coupon overage?

I had 5 of the $1/1 Schick q's and one $2/1 Schick q's that I took to CVS on Monday. I had 6 of the trial size razors (neither coupon had exclusions on trial sizes) as well as a few other items so that I still would have had to pay some oop. The cashier told me I couldn't use the $2/1 coupon on the trial size (it was $1.29).

My question is: I know CVS doesn't generally give overage, but can I use a coupon for a higher value and get the overage ($0.71) off the rest of my purchase? Or is that illegal?

I'm asking mainly b/c in this Sunday's SS, there are going to be more $2/1 schick q's.

The cashiers at my CVSs usually just reduce the coupon to the value of the item. I wonder if it is a YMMV?

This has been my experience: you only get overage on CVS coupons. Say you had a $2 off any Schick razor--it would take the full $2 off even if it was only 1.29 as long as you had other items in the order. I have used the $1/1 and $3/2 any schick razors on the trial size with no problem. If I had 6 of the $2/1 any Schick, equaling $12 total, I would buy 9 of the $1.29 trial size razors equaling $11.61. The first 5 coupons would scan at $2 and the last one would beep and the cashier would be prompted by the cash register to change the last coupon to $1.61. I would get all 9 free. As long as you have the right number of items per coupons you should be able to use them, but not get overage, the last one should be adjusted down. Hope this makes sense.

I assume your trial size are still .99 from what you indicated, in which case your last coupon should have been adjusted down to .94.

On sale they are .99, but on Monday they were $1.29, and they wouldn't let me use a $2/1 coupon, even though I had at least $5 oop cost after coupons.
