Default ECB not at full value?

Stopped in at a different CVS yesterday on a break and got a weird ECB situation. My transaction was

4 Smart Rinse @3.49
1 Oral B @ 6.99
1 Brut @ 3.19
Subtotal - 24.14

less $4/$20 CVSq
less $1 Brut q
less$1.99 ecb (still subtotal of 17.15)

Then I gave her a $5 ecb, which wouldn't scan. The cashier tried manually punching it in a couple of times and said, "You can only use $4 of this." I replied that it was clearly marked as $5. She called a manager up to the front who told me that I could only use $4 of it because I used too many q's. I said I only had 1 CVS q and 1 mfg q...not exactly a load...and I reminded the manager that ECB's are not q's anyway they're cash equivalent. She said, "I know that, SIR", and turned the screen to face me. The screen had a popup that read something like, "$4.00 allowed". Then she told me I could either eat the $1 loss to use the ecb or save it for later. I just kept it and paid the OOP with a "Geez, I'll never be back in this store again." I decided not to give her the helpful tip that her fly was open. 30 minutes later, same ECB rang up beautifully at another store.

I remembered reading here that some helpful scan of DOOM can reduce your ECB's to $3, but mine was $4 and I didn't see the cashier scan a different card. Also, it couldn't be limiting me to one ECB per trans because they were going to take the other one, just not at full value. Anyone else know what happened here?

i'd bet it is the 4.00/20 q, i've heard that if this happens have the cashier scan your EC card again, and then everything will work. the q makes everything else after 4.00 or less.

Yeah, sometimes when you use a $/$$ coupon the register goes nuts. Having them scan your EC card again before your ecbs like pp said normally helps.

Thanks. Good to keep in mind for next time...if I ever get another $/$$. I bet if I had asked them to scan my card again Mgr. Attitude may have given me another "SIR".

The same thing happened to me when I used the Discover 5 off 10 coupon.

Oh my God, someone need to teach the manager some good customer service skills! LOL The attitude part was uncalled for. If it pleased the manager, he could have done something to fix that situation. If he didn't know the answer, he could have called CS. I probably would have surrendered the $5 ECB and given you a $10 gift card for the inconvenience.

Okay...I am getting carried away. I took a class on Start Service the past two days for my job. Do something to dazzle the customer when it's within your reach. (Shake head)

Sorry that happened to you... I can empathize.

I wouldnt have been happy with that resolution either. Why pay OOP when you hand over your hard earned ECB's? For all you know she could easily have taken 1.00 out of your backpocket. That pretty much is what she did to you. She denied you the right to use your ecb's and made you pay extra OOP.

I just had this happen to me for the first time and I took care of it by calling C/S and having the DM call me back. Mine was a complaint about a rude mgr in addition to being totally denied q's and ecb use at one store. The DM reimbursed me every bit of OOP and ECB I overused and added another $10 (for inconvenience) to the GC.

Its worth the call.
