"one coupon per purchase limit 4 of like coupons"

That means that you can only use 4 like coupons in one transaction. Buy 4 widgets, use 4 widget coupons. Buy 6 widgets use 6 widget coupons is a no no if the wording is limit 4 like coupons.

what if you have multiple coupons for that one item?

one manufacturer coupon per item. you can not have two per item. The only time you could use more than one coupon per item (you have one box of crackers), if if that box of crackers has a store coupon to match it and the store allows you to use both a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon

If the store's machine doesn't recognize the coupon, you should see about doing a SEPARATE transaction. I have an incident today at the local Dollar General store, the cashier was ringing two similar coupons for 2 items(1 each). And only one coupon was being recognized. The employee kept insisting she is doing separate transactions BUT she wasn't doing it. Each transaction is considered one order in my world. She called for the store manager and they both argue with me that the coupon is invalid. I told them I would buy only 1 of the item & use 1 coupon. I took back the "unrecognized" coupon and went to a nearby Walmart. Coupon was recognized over there and my problem was solved easier.

I used to work for Walmart as a cashier and never seen any cashiers BEFORE call upon a manager to handle a coupon problem like mine.

Dollar General registers are funky... I found its best to have them ring the item, then scan the coupon, ring the next item, scan the coupon. If the coupon is off 2, then break them in sets (2 deodorants, then coupon, etc)
Cashier was miffed at why I wanted her to ring it like that, but when my sister checked out after me, it was beep city. She was using the same coupons I had used. As soon as the manager voided the transaction and rang the item, then coupon, it worked.

yup dollar general computers are crazy. they also have to scan each item itself. dont let them do say "quantity 5" and then scan one item. this is the one thing that will most definately cause the coupons not to be accepted. their computers now see the 5 items as one as it was only rung up once. about 2 years ago, a friend and i would go to dollar general monthly. and we ALWAYS had this issue until we finally told the cashier to ring each item up (scan them across the scanner individually)...now i tell them before they ring it to do it this way and i dont have the issue anymore

and yes, dollar general employees have to have their manager come over to "fix" the problem. i even had one store manager tell me no to a printable and the district manager was standing next to her and he corrected her and said "yes we do"....she had no idea.
