I do have a section in my coupon caddy for store coupons. But the only coupons I put in there are ones that are good for a while. The weekly coupons never go in there. Those that I am going to use (or think I will use) go in the front of my caddy.
I once had a bagged salad coupon for Albertsons but wound up not using it because Winco had salad for less money. So I just threw the coupon away.
I only clip coupons for things I might buy. Most of the coupons I see are for things I would never use. Like air freshener. Or certain cleaning supplies. I also only use Method laundry detergent. So I don't bother to clip the others. I do sometimes give some of my coupons to a friend. My daughter and I have food allergies so we can't eat a lot of foods. But if I see a coupon for something I know that my friend and her family eats, I will give her the coupon.
I know it is best to buy things at a low price and with a coupon. But this doesn't always work for me. Sometimes I just need things. I suppose there are those people who will only eat things that they got for next to nothing. I am not that way. I also don't want a huge stockpile. I do have a tendency to buy too much stuff and then wind up having to throw some things out because they are spoiled. I don't care how cheap it is, if I can't use it I won't buy it. Unless it is something the food bank can use and then I will get it and donate it.
I make multiple shopping lists. One for each store. That way I know what I am buying and where.
There are so many variations of how to do this coupon thing. It will take you a little while to figure out the best method for you and your situations.
I think planning is key. Figure out what you need for the week and buy that. No matter what. If you're on your last roll of toilet paper, for example, get more. Use a portion of your shopping budget for things you need.
Then look through the ad for things you will need in the future. If it's on sale this week and you can find a coupon for it, get it. Maybe you don't need pasta this week, but if it's something you will definitely use and it's on sale and you have a coupon, get it.
At first the majority of your weekly shopping budget (maybe 90%) will go toward the things you need. As you build your stockpile gradually, more of your budget will go toward perishable items and replenishing that stockpile since you'll already have a supply of your needed items.
