    Default A high from Dumpster diving...then a low :(

Went on my first full dive (last time I just scouted a couple.) Well went to the first with a step ladder so I could look in better (Not fit enough to actually dive in LOL). Well I check the far side first without much, just a few scattered ones here & there. I saw a few bundles & was getting excited till I saw it was the junk advertisements to try to get you to buy the paper. I go to the other side & see more bundles....this time I saw "Comic" sticking out...ok that is where the Q normally are so I wiggle 1 out to check BINGO!!! So I grab the two bundles I can grab & dump them outside. Before I can grab much more 2 ladies come over & ask if they can help me. I kindly explained that I was looking for coupons & that i had already called the recycle company & was told it was ok.

They said they would need to ask the Father (It was on a church grounds). I quickly grabbed some more that were loose when they walked away. I loaded up & did wait seeing they were by a car on a phone. They came back & said that is how they raise money & it was considered private property. That the recycle company didn't have right to give permission. I said ok no problem I will bring back what I don't use & then won't be back after that.

So up side: I have a load of 4/17 SS To trade/sell.
Down side: Will be the last time unless I find another new stand dumpsite.
Other upside: at least the ladies didn't say I had to put them back.

    Does the church accept donations?

Assuming they do, call and speak with the priest, explain your situation and that you are a couponer interested in pulling the inserts from the bundles that are dumped there and say that you would be willing to donate your freebies (or whatever) to them in exchange. It would be win-win IMO.

the dumpster company does not have the right to tell you it is okay...get permission from the owner of the property!. like someone said call or walk in and ask to talk to the priest(pastor or whoever). if you go in, take a stack of freebies with you and see if you can work out a deal. maybe even offer to teach a class in exchange for getting to dumpster dive.

Don't be afraid!! Call and talk to the priest, apologize for taking what you did, saying you didn't realize it was private property (which you didn't), the worst he can say is no :) GL!!

That's odd...I didn't realize places got paid for their recycling. My dad works for his towns county recycling place and it costs the county THOUSANDS each year. Recycling is not profitable so for the church to say thats how they make money seems odd to me.

Oh well..you go one good haul at least

I wouldn't even know where to go to find a dumpster lol. I have heard from a not so reliable source that my newspaper company picks up the papers to recycle them if they don't sell.

Oh yes, recycling can be very profitable. The town I used to live in had mandatory recycling and no trash pick up. So we had to take our trash and recyclables to the transfer station that we shared with 2 other towns. We had to sort everything and put it in it's appropriate section down to types of paper, types of cans, etc. If we didn't recycle we had to pay a fee to dump the trash.

What they did was sell the recyclables and at a profit too, which paid for the transfer station and all the salaries of the workers, and the surplus went back to the three participating town budgets. I think the reasons many towns and cities don't do it is because it can be difficult to get people on board with it.

Where we live now has recycling available but it is not mandatory, so not as many people do it. To make it easier they have what is called end user recycling, which means you don't have to sort your recyclables. Though that probably makes it harder for dumpster diving lol, since along with the newspapers you would have any number of other recyclable cans, bottles, boxes, and what not in varying degrees of cleanliness lol. And I don't need inserts that badly lol.
