Manufacturer coupons with "Redeem at..."

You know those tearpads, hangtangs, and booklet coupons that say "Redeem at (store name)" but say manufacturer coupon? I figured since they're manufacturer coupons, I can use them at any store, so that's what I've been doing. But I tried to use one last week, and the cashier read it and rejected it. He said they won't get reimbursed for it because it specifically says another store. Any idea if that's true?

I had always been able to use them too as long as they say manufacturer coupon on it. if a clerk ever said anything i would just explain that it is indeed a manufacturer coupon or i would say "can you please just scan it and if it doesn't work i will take it back." they always scanned no problem. but here lately they have not been accepting them and won't even scan them. there is a difference between a manufacturer coupon and a store coupon. they wouldn't be reimbursed for a store coupon of another store or one that says "redeemable only at ____" but a manufacturer coupon they definitely would get reimbursed. if you look at the redemption address it will say RETAILER: and give redemption instructions with he manufacturer address. but if it is a store coupon it will have the store headquarters address as the redemption address. instead of arguing i just pull out another coupon or just tell them to put the item back. If it won't affect the barcode i will also cut the other store's logo off the coupon and then i don't have a problem. some of the kroger manufacturer coupons have the logo well under the barcode. but it really is getting quite ridiculous that these stores are not explaining this to their employees.
