The DND wording has more to do with marketing strategy than anything else.
Super Couponing Tips by Jill Cataldo gives a very good explanation:
"Some manufacturers believe that coupon doubling may cheapen the perception of their product or brand, since it enables a shopper to reduce the price of a product to the point that it’s very inexpensive or even free. Even though a manufacturer does not compensate a store that offers coupon doubling, a manufacturer may not want shoppers to get the product for an extremely low price. They don’t want their brand to be perceived as a bargain buy. So, they may add the “Do Not Double” wording to the coupon to help ensure the coupon will only allow the specified value to be discounted from that product."
But I think it goes even further than this. I think there are some agreements between the retailers who double and the manufacturers. The retailer is eating the cost of the doubled coupon, so the manufacturer might put out popular coupons that say DND in order to give the retailer a way out - they can choose to double or not to double if they wish.
This theory is backed up by the fact that the stores that double will often have a different version of a blinkie coupon or tearpad, with a barcode that starts with a 9, while the store down the road that does not double has the same coupon with a 5 barcode.
It has nothing to do with making sure the retailer knows that the manufacturer will not pay the doubled portion - the wording on the coupon already makes that clear ("manufacturer will pay face value + .08 handling).
Coupons have had this wording for a very long time. It's only recently that doubling stores have been controlling their costs in a tight, competitive market by adhering to the wording and pulling coupons that would otherwise double automatically (the 5s) and manually overriding them.

Thank you! That is the explanation I have been searching for for years!

While I understand not necessairly wanting to be labeled a "bargain brand," I know I personally won't buy a product unless I can get it for the bargain price (or unless there is no other way to get it like some specialty items). Especially withthe economy still the way it is and more people couponing than ever, I would think they would re-think their marketing campaign. But hey... that's just me - thrifty little ole me.

I like to save money...so this could be fun. Does anyone know what stores in Northern IL double or triple? Is there a way to find this out on the internet? We have Jewel, Hi-Lander, some Mom & Pop operations, Walmart, Target, Schnucks, Woodmans (my personal fav), and Aldi around me...but I am not adverse to traveling for it. As it is, Woodman's is a good 45 min drive (we make it date night grocery shopping :-)

    Thanks!!!

not trying ber critical but Target is the worst.
They have a limit on how many like coupons they will take.

    Doubling or tripling...........
if they do it is news to me and would shock the world.

They and Food Lion and Walmart are all tied for last place as far as coupon policy.

I'm in North Carolina and the coupon policy of Harris Teeter, Bi-Lo and Lowes Foods, and maybe Bloom, are our best choices, most of the time.
We also have Food Lion, Walmart, Target, Kmart, and CVS, Walgreen, and Rite Aid.

The best stores for you on coupons, may be different than ours.
Alot of people shop Walmart and Target.
