If free wheeling with a rotary cutter doesn't seem like a good fit for you,

I've used a rotary cutter for almost two years and have never used a ruler. No problems here.

A good mat is essential. I paid more for mine than I would have liked (no job at the time) but it was well worth it.

Totally free wheeling without a ruler just seems so wrong to me-lol...too many years of quilting I think. I do it occasionally, but I like my ruler to cut against. I use to be in the habit of using rotary cutter so much when I was sewing that I would get stumped by how cut something without it until I would remember that, oh yeah, I do have scissors & can use them
