Is it illegal to take them out of the recycling center? That is going to depend on your area. Your best bet would be to go over and talk to the person in charge and ask them. Tell them that you are just looking for coupons, see what they say.
Where I live person that delivers the newspaper to gas stations and other stores comes and collects the left over newspapers and he or she dumps them in the paper recycling bins around town. Which is why I can dumpster dive for them. Our newspaper is not put out till after 1 PM so I know that the leftover Sunday papers are not collected till Monday afternoon so if I want to go dumpster diving I go Tuesday mornings. This whole dumpster diving thing is very dependent learning what works in your area.

I had the police called on me this week at the newspaper recycling bin, they said i was stealing, HAD TO LEAVE 20 SUNDAY INSERTS. Don't understand what I did wrong, but they sent four police cars for just one 5 foot 1 in of me. I JUST SAID OK AND LEFT WOUN'T GO THERE ANYMORE.
What time and day is best to dumpster dive? Sunday evening or Monday? Thanks so much for the help. =)
Depends...you may need to scout out your recycling bins. Here our paper does not come out till the afternoon, so the paper carriers don't toss their left over papers till Monday late afternoon. So I usually go Monday night or wait till Tuesday morning.
I only go for the papers the carriers toss and don't do OPP's (other peoples papers)

I've often thought of asking a convenience store I often frequent to see if I can get the inserts from their unsold Sunday papers, but I don't take rejection well. Even in the form of 'no, you can't have them' or "we already give them to someone else."
I used to go DDing on Monday and Tuesday mornings, but haven't for probably 8 months now, I think. Not because I chickened out or anything, but I had a lot of stuff start going on in my life and it just didn't happen. Then the church where I used to get some inserts removed their recycling bin. People used to leave unwanted inserts in our smaller breakroom. Then they started leaving them in the larger breakroom, but the ones I was wanting were always gone. My mom lives with me now and gets the Sunday paper so at least now I can see what the inserts are before deciding to go get more. I still have my kit in my car trunk, but the batteries on my headlamp might need to be replaced. hahahaha.
Oh, and I kept meaning to go to the bins behind the newspaper office, but never did until one day...and all the bins were GONE! They had 4. Makes me wonder what they do with the papers now.![]()

It just depends upon your area. In mine, I don't bother diving for Sunday inserts until the next weekend. The inserts in my bins are from papers discarded by other people and they tend to hold onto them for a few days. Or months/years in some cases.I've actually found some from several years before.
Just wanted to add a little fun fact: It sounds weird, but you get to the point where you can recognize the inserts as being from a certain person's paper. For example, I find them from "the folder" who takes each individual section of the paper and folds it in half before discarding it. I also come across "the condenser." That one is more irritating-- they open each insert to its middle and then put other inserts inside them, opened the same way, and add more inserts, etc. It's such a pain! And strange.![]()
