Most of my furniture as a child was salvaged from curbsides by my mother- it helps that she knew how to mostly rebuild and refinish anything that needed it. If any of you are into yardsales and tend to spend your weekends driving through residential areas, be on the lookout for large curbside items. If it's abandoned property (which it is when it's on the curb next to trash cans) scoop it up. It helps to have kids for that, too.

I've never thought of dumpster diving for coupons, mostly because I'm a bachelor living in a single room, and I eat in a dining hall- there's only so much I ever buy, and I never considered trading coupons before, so I've never had cause to go find more. I have dove for nifty architectural details when buildings are being demolished, or bits of old furniture (I'd hence recommend a small, standard toolkit for all diving expeditions, as a matter of course and just in case), and also bread.

A lot of bakeries throw out their bread at the end of the day- sometimes they hand it out from the back door (there's one in Richmond that'll fill up paper sacks for you if you provide them), or sometimes they just stack it in a dumpster. Look for bread that's on top or in the middle, touching only other bread, that isn't damp, and that smells only of itself. If you're scared of contamination- and if you figure out when they throw it out every day, you should be able to pluck it up before it sits there for even a minute- you can cook it in delicious dishes like bread pudding, french toast, or traditional breadsauce for chicken, which will kill the germs and make it extra-safe.

I finally got me one of them there headlamp thingamajiggies. It was too difficult to hold up the lid and dig while holding my Maglite at just the right angle or even shining it into one of the holes in the side and dig around so I bought me one. I had a fold-able grabber dealie, but I ended up taping it up real good so it'll stay open since it kept folding when I was trying to use it. And you know what? I haven't gotten a single insert since doing that. :shrug7: But people have been bringing in their inserts at work and leaving them for people so I take a few coupons and leave a few coupons. It's working nicely but I want MORE! Please, Sir, can I have some...more? (sorry. I was in Oliver as a kid)

OMgoodness, this thread is too funny. In my county,it is illegal it go through the trash once its on the street or in some parking lot. The trash company considers it stealing. We have a lot of places around here that pay top dollar for recycled stuff. You can get away with the little trash cans but not going through a big dumpster. Im not sure how it is in the rest of the state though..Man Im felling very jealous, I want to dumpster dive now. For coupons ...rofl

It is my understanding that DD is legal, as the items have been thrown away. I do not know how this varies from state to state. I do believe that there are specific guidelines, such as items need to be obviously discarded, such as being in a trash can or dumpster, or put by the curb.

What is the best way to find out if dumpster diving is legal where you are (without drawing attention to yourself)?
TIA

Just did this for the first time Monday. It was fun, and no diving required - really, no Dumpster involved since it was just a little waist-high rolly-bin.

I'd been thinking about where I should try to go to get more inserts, and when I was riding my bike home Monday night I noticed a newspaper in a bag on the street. I stopped to get it, but it wasn't a Sunday paper so I went to toss it in a nearby bin. It turned out to be full of Sunday and Monday papers.

I only got 6 because I had to go through each of them and remove the inserts - no way I'm carting home a bunch of extra paper on my back. Plus it was windy as I-don't-know-what so my nose was running and stuff was trying to blow everywhere.

I'm hoping this wasn't a fluke or one-time thing, and I'll have something to look forward to on Mondays. Next week, I'll definitely be better-prepared. Just keeping my fingers crossed that I don't show up with my disposable gloves and extra grocery sack (much easier to clip to my backpack than try to shove them inside with my bike tools and work clothes) to find the bin is nowhere in sight.

I was just reading along...then you had to throw the kids in the dumpster and I lost it. Too funny. My kids only 2, so I will hold off for now. I think he would actually like that though.
